With regard to the residents in Taipei, the impression that Tian-Mu gives them maybe “an exotic spot”, “a prestigious residence”, or “a place with many rich men”; however, the formation of these impressions has gradually been changed to the current state because of the development and accumulation of time. This study mainly finds out how different groups define the boundary of Tian-Mu and understands whether its covering area would expand gradually with the development of time or region through discussing the perception and definition that the users have towards environment or not; and also, how different users perceive the environment that they perform activities in and construct different images for Tian-Mu through daily work and rest would also be discussed.
In this study, different basic backgrounds have their own different influences with regard to environmental perception are discovered through the boundary, landmark, centre, various kinds of getting in & out and activity spots that are described by the interviewees from the map and inquiring the interviewees for the feelings and ways of definitions that they have regarding these locations. The differences on careers not only influence the users’ daily activity scope, their concerned key points when describing the boundary are somewhat different as well. The differences of residence time and age will not influence the quantity that the living circle appoints, but these differences would influence the familiarity towards different living circles. For the same activity gathering spots, they would also have different definitions because of the influence from the interviewees’ different residences and living styles. And for the appearance and disappearance of these activity gathering spots, they not only cause the prosperity and decline of the living circles and commercial circles, their covered scopes and boundaries also extend continuously, overlap, and even become independent with each other. And the so-called Tian-Mu image does not completely and truly exists in Tian-Mu, instead it is pieced together continuously by the users’ perceptions and imaginations towards many small scenes.
Through the drawings and interview data that are obtained from the study process, this study has constructed the commonly known Tian-Mu scope, centre, and landmark, or the ones that are perceived by most people, it also finds out the respective living circles for different user groups, and the relationship between these living circles and Tian-Mu scope & boundary. With regard to the city discussion and design in the future, besides providing another direction that regards living circle for discussion, this study also hopes that during the process of community construction and building, it could provide the planner with more imaginations so as to create diverse environment with different activities, commerce or cultural characteristics.
