This study starts with observations on citizens’ activities from a microscopic perspective. The sketchy city model is established step by step through phenomenal observations, from which possible problems may be discovered and understood. Then, the relationship between our discussion on the composite use of different districts and complex factors such as the city environment, theories, policies and businesses is examined. Also, broad extension and discussion are done with a macroscopic view.
This study is divided into three parts. The first part begins with current problems on improper composite use of different districts. One of our concerns is the obvious city problems compared with city plans and citizens’ activities. Other discussions include related factors of the city composite phenomenon, the way how the city space reform movement changed the city figuration, and also conflicts between laws and the actual enforcement. The second part focuses on the judgment upon composite values and individual values through retrospection and discussion on theories and cases. Comparing the city composite forms in Taipei with those in other countries, we can find the similarities and differences between city and architectural composite viewpoints. As a result, we can not only have better understanding of the way a city forms and develops, but also construct a new form. If the city composite form is inevitable, there must be a certain strategy to get the best effect, which is also one of the main concerns of this study. The third part is about design operation. After constructing individual viewpoints, we take the base of Nankang Trade Park as the target object and attempt to use an experimental way as the proposal of the city plan. Intended issues are examined with an experimental spirit, or the truth and irony of the phenomenon itself are stressed. The proposed strategy responds to spacial issues under the spontaneous behavior of the city phenomenon. The key point is not to overthrow the old system, but to propose another plan with possible breakthrough, and to develop the composite concept. Let’s confront changes of the city space, and draft an overall future vision of a composite city.
