The design of any architectural space and expression of structures are related with materials. Architecture can be said to be a history of evolution of architectural “materials” and techniques. The choices and applications of materials reflect not only the culture and customs of a specific time but also the stage of development human technological culture is at. The development of material (from ancient times when man employed natural materials as elements to the production of cast iron after the industrial revolution and the discovery of concrete towards the end of 19th century) has caused a drastic change in the structure of architecture, for instance the emergence of architectural styles such as the International Style. Up till today, with the arrival of “polymerization” of materials, man’s lifestyle faces dramatic changes. The utilization of this technology has extended from common living aspect into professional construction systems. Due to the large variety of plastic materials, this thesis introduces popular plastic construction materials and everyday life plastic products as an initial step to understanding material “polymerization”. The application of plastic in non-construction systems as is commonly seen in local building methods also shapes the experimental strategies in applicable “plastic constructions”.

In recent years, plastic has gradually appeared as the main material in various architectural designs. The majority of these new types of “plastic architecture” remains at an experimental stage. Limitations such as construction methods, characteristics of plastic, project budgets, methods of polymerization, pollution and recycling issues, etc., control the practicability of “plastic architecture”. With an understanding to this, the author, whose family being a plastic-manufacturer, discusses the feasibility and methods of plastic construction. Besides providing the views on plastic construction from a manufacturer, this essay is also approached with the angle of a “ consumer of plastic”. The sample location of consumption of plastic is at Tai-Yuan Street, the biggest plastic trading place in Taipei. Suitable plastic materials are selected, experimented and observed.

This thesis will use experiments on design as a beginning to discuss “plastic construction”. Main locations for plastic-sampling are Tai-Yuan Street in Taipei, Tam Shuei scrap yard and plastic-manufacturing factories run by the author’s family in Kaohsiung. The process of sampling consists of purchasing, recycling and self-manufacturing. Applicable materials for architecture are collected from these three stages as samples for experiments on polymerized materials. The experiments are manipulated according to the concepts of assembling architectural elements and the hierarchy of components. Material boards on an one to one scale are produced according to the results of experiments and design. These material boards enable discussions on potential spatial types and future applications produced by plastic construction.

At the same time as plastic is largely being used, it also means great resource consumption of the earth. Therefore the development of plastic building materials must be thought of form a point of view of sustainability in order for it to act as a new architectural expression upon the arrival of the plastic construction era.
