The present study aims to explore major operational methods and key elements in designing leisure hotel, to serve as valuable references for related architects and designers. Not much discussion on the perception of leisure hotel has been seen in Taiwan’s leisure and construction industries. The blooming popularity of leisure activities has caused increasing coverage on the subject in the newspapers, magazines and TV. Nevertheless, a vast majority of them are concentrated on the finished architecture and the consumers’ personal experience or affections than on the original ideas of designers. In addition, most of the island’s renowned leisure hotels were commissioned to foreign designers or architects. This reflects the inadequacy of discourses on leisure hotels by home architects. In light of this, the study intends to investigate the key concepts and operational methods of leisure hotels.
Principle methods include literature review, case study, in-depth interview, and empirical design method. Literature review focuses on the discussion of related definitions and current conditions of leisure hotels. Case study is directed at key architects and prominent domestic and overseas leisure hotels. In-depth interviews target at one-on-one in-depth interviews with consumers and related practitioners such as designers, architects, and developers. And empirical design aims to verify the applicability of the research findings by practical operation on case design.
Four major indicators to leisure hotel are deducted from the study: leisure image, natural gathering, designing style, and environmental sustainability. Targeting these four indicators, important ideas and major viewpoints extracted from the quantitative focus interviews are then induced to compile the “perceived value model of leisure hotel design.” Lastly, partial values of the perceived value model are adopted to operate on a case leisure hotel to finally verify the applicability of the perceived value model.
We acknowledge from the study that the natural, perceptional, and operational aspects of the perceived value model may be applied on the consideration of dimension and spirit designing, to perfect the contents and value of the architecture. The research method employed in this study can be equally applied to other case studies. For example, to explore how to gain the trustworthiness from the patients in designing a hospital, or how to let consumers taste the delicacies of the cuisines and experience the spiritual level in designing a restaurant. Such similar research methods can be used to describe the spiritual design contents through problem constructing and project assessment.
