Most of the urban MRT stations distribute underground and create a new living area for Taipei city after the appearance of MRT.
Because of the speed and the convenience, the inhabitants depend on MRT to get around Taipei city everyday, and it makes these MRT underground stations become very important transferring spaces. The relationship between MRT and the people turns into a urban fluid in Taipei city. The way people move in Taipei now becomes “node to node”-one station to another, instead of been in traffic jam. Underground stations make the city’s impression more and more regional; in the meantime, they become important gates to several districts in Taipei. Consequently, Taipei MRT underground stations must need new concepts of developing strategies.

The following is the brief introduction of the contents of each chapter:

Chapter1 Illustrating the background, purpose, the major subject and the process of this research.

Chapter2 Review of the three subjects: In Cultural Geography, discussing the evolution of Taipei city by looking at the changes of the artificial relief in Taipei and the concept of Scrape and Palimpsest. In urban MRT, we will review the relationship of traffic, MRT and the city developments. The discussions of the historical documentations in underground spaces developing in three different countries will be involved.

Chapter3 Discussing and analyzing characters of multi-function structures in the post-modern; and the strategy of complex spaces in this study came from this concept.

Chapter4 Taking the urban fluid and complex spaces as major subjects in design. I chose four MRT underground stations in central Taipei as the sites of this study. In addition to original function of communications, my attempt is to create various theme spaces in the stations for people to roam around.

Chapter5 MRT stations have become crucial locations of regional developing in Taipei city. Complex spaces can make the underground stations much more functional which will be very beneficial in the city’s prosperity. How to make a good use of MRT and let it be more than just a communicating tool for citizens are important works to be done for the city of Taipei.
