The research aims to examine that how billiard has transformed in Taiwan recently. The main concerned subject lies in why the billiard culture in Taiwan converts dramatically and what role the national state plays in the globalization process of billiard. .
The social image of billiard has been changed substantially while the sport was in associated with the media. From the viewpoint of the media/sport complex, the media acquired billiard games as program in relatively low cost and to fill in the sport channels’ program time. For billiard sport organization, sports broadcasting rights fee from media can cover most costs and expenses. The relationship between media and billiard sport organization is increasingly close and intense but also caused the billiard organization more dependent to the media. In the perspective of gender and sport, the women billiard is the most famous women sport in Taiwan, but the representations image of female billiard players on the media contribute to the perpetuation of gender stereotypes. The media also focus on sportswomen’s physical attractiveness in accordance with conventional standards, bias and myth however ignore female billiards players’ professional performance. Finally, the political power remains deeply intervening in sporting fields from past to present. In the initial period, the state restricted billiard activities. While now, the billiards becomes one of the most valuable sporting activity that the state eagerly like to incorporate with. Because it has contributed to construct “national identity" for the country. On the other hand, by way of international billiards sports event, sport/media/tourism complex could take form, and let the state exchange the opportunity of exposure on the world stage.
