This study investigated the citation format, citation errors, highly-cited author, highly-cited journal, and Indirect Citation of cited references in theses of library and information studies in Taiwan during 2003-2005. A total of 740 references, quoted in 74 theses in the field, were obtained for citation analysis. The results of the study would be expected to establish a base model for the future study and also to elevate both the quality and accuracy of referencing styles for thesis writing.

The results of this study reveal that:
    (1) Chicago(Turabian)style alike remained to be the mainstream of theses writing, followed by the APA style.
    (2) The average citation error is the ratio of 20.2%, which occurred frequently on a issue number format.
    (3) The main subject interest of postgraduate concerned was “Information Seeking Behavior” during 2003-2005. Hence those authors who published their theses during this period had caused a highly-cited journals and highly-cited authors on the same subject.
    (4) The ratio of Indirect Citation was merely 7.9%, it shows a serious ignorance of academic ethic issues.

Suggestions based on the findings of this study are given as followed:
    (1) Providing writers of any academic writing a more Chinese-friendly citation format.
    (2) Training researchers the usage of referencing styles in order to improve quality of future writing.
    (3) Comply with a workable referencing style for a better fulfillment of academic ethic and academic achievement.
