    Abstract:

Following the path of the developing of Internet, library service has turned from traditional service to electronic service. Through web page, libraries display and indicate to their readers their service, policy and service procedures. As the integration of all library service, a homepage leads all readers to the pages that meet the demand of readers. As a result, library homepage design and information organization is important. With tremendous amount of service information, it is an important issue for libraries to choose what information to present on the homepage.
This research adopts the research results from the Eyetrack III, Poynter Institute. It analyzes the homepage of twenty-six colleges inside and outside Taiwan. Also, a questionnaire is made with the analysis of the homepage for further understanding the demand of users. The following is based on the conclusions of the research:
1.At different stages, the most visible change of libraries in Taiwan is the titles of reference information and of research categories. The least is the users’ instruction.
2.The difference between the libraries in Taiwan and those abroad is the former focuses on the library information categories while the later in the reference service and research.
3.The developing trend of library homepage is as the following:
(1)The information of reference service and research should be more important than library information.
(2)Rapid and convenience data search should gradually replace the word-linked library resources.
(3)To add “Research Assistance” and “How To and How Do I” on the library homepage.
(4)To shorten the length of news.
(5)To build a quick link list.
4.The reference for a library homepage design and structure:
(1)Functional Menu provides a library homepage with a more concise and more convenience structure.
(2)The basic element of a library homepage is the library information while the core is reference service and research categories.

    This research provides five suggestions:
1.Library should emphasize the core information and trend of homepage before design.
2.To make the most of the functional menu to effectively collect information of the same category.
3.To simplify data search process flow for users.
4.To shorten the length of news and to present it with a link.
5.To decrease the library information items set up by library, but increase items that user need.
