    Abstract: 目前的液晶顯示器所使用液晶材料為桿狀單軸性向列型液晶,其應答時間長,容易有影像遲滯現象;而雙軸性向列型液晶則可大幅縮短應答時間。本研究主要合成一系列以苯環為中心,在其1,2,4位置外圍接上三個炔聯苯基形成Y形分子及另在中心苯環5位置接上炔苯氰基或炔苯基的類板狀分子,以進一步研究其液晶相的雙軸性。
    本研究中,利用修改板狀分子的幾何形狀並引入極性單元,以探討此二因素對形成雙軸性液晶的影響。除了利用在偏光顯微鏡觀測以光學方式證實雙軸性外,還利用X-ray繞射儀,在一磁場下觀測磁場與分子軸向的關係,進一步證明雙軸性液晶相的存在。
    Biaxial liquid crystals are predicted to exhibit significantly shorter switching time than uniaxial calamitic ones that are currently used in liquid crystal displays. In this study, rigid Y-shaped and board like compounds were synthesized and their potential biaxiallity was envestigated and verified by optical and X-ray diffraction studies. Influences of geometrical molecular shapes as well as molecular polarities on optical biaxiallity were exploited.
