This article applies the total factor productivity approach to explore and to compare the productivities of the domestic banks and the foreign banks in Taiwan area. The estimation of total factor productivity follows the approach which was initiated by Olley and Pakes and then improved by Levinsohn and Pertrin, and by Nakane and Weintraub, the production functions of the two groups are estimated and the residuals are computed to represent the productivities. Taking the real operating assets as the proxy for bank output, and using seasonal data covering the period beginning from 1995 and ending in 2004, we have found that the labor productivity of the domestic banks is 1.3 times as large as that of the foreign banks. However, the total factor productivities of the foreign banks is 3 times as large as the domestic banks. Moreover, domestic banks perform better than the foreign banks is so far as the variations in both the labor productivity and the total productivity are concerned.
