The aims of this study are to investigate the difficulties in reading English, needs assessment, and to design and develop an e-learning English reading strategy course for non-English major graduate students. Fundamental to this research attempts to solve the difficulties in reading English for non-English major graduate students. Graduate students must possess the ability to read a lot of English texts. Universities should provide courses on “learning how to read” for graduate students in order to overcome their difficulties in reading English.
Based on the purposes addressed above, a design-based research method is adopted. The research process includes analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The results of the study indicated that vocabulary and grammar are the reasons of the difficulties in reading English texts. However, reading is a cognitive process. Students should be clarified with their notion of English reading. Hence, the framework of the e-learning English reading strategy course includes a) clarify the notion, b) identify the topic, c) skimming, d) scanning, e) comprehension and reflection.
This study may serve non-English major graduate students studying at Tamkang University, who are seeking ways to improve their English reading strategies.
