Bilateral relations between ASEAN and Australia have been developing for a long time. Australia was the first dialogue partner with ASEAN in 1974; meanwhile, ASEAN also accepted technical and military assistance from Australia. In Cold War period, bilateral relations between ASEAN and Australia were stable and close. In the 1990s, ASEAN and Australia had indeed faced quite a few problems, such as quarrels between Keating and Mahathir, Australia interfered in East Timor issue and so on. Happening Bali Bombing, relation is getting increasingly serious.
Member of ASEAN and Australia are important countries in East Asia community and they have closed political and economic relations to Taiwan. We have to deeply understand the bilateral relations between ASEAN and Australia.
This thesis first explores development of diplomatic policy in both ASEAN and Australia. The second part of the thesis discusses the interaction between ASEAN and Australia in Cold war, post Cold war and after 911 periods.
