Main purposes of this study are to examine the development of TFT LCD industry in Japan and Taiwan and to analyze the competitive advantage of the industry in each country also movements of international strategic alliances of the industry in between. M. Porter’s five force analysis, diamond theory, international strategic alliance theory, and SWOT analysis are employed in this study.
Resource sharing is supposed to be the main goal of international strategic alliance, which includes the sharing of production inputs and equipments, R & D, and market. Through strategic alliances of resource sharing, alliances benefit from costs reduction, products quality improvement, sometimes inducing sales price lowering even to market expansion, and fruits of cluster effects.
Major finding of this study is that the TFT LCD industries of two countries have integrated in technology development, production, and marketing to improve individual competitive advantage in the world market through international strategic alliance during the period examined. And the strategic alliance between Taiwan and Japan arises from different comparative advantages owned by each. The strategic goal of the alliance is not only to curb the rapid development of Korea but also to prevent the vicious impacts from drastic growth of China. And the most important is to strengthen the international division of labor between Taiwan and Japan, enhance regional production network, and reinforce industrial structure of both countries.
Under the ongoing of restructuring through integration of Japanese TFT LCD industry, Taiwan doesn’t have any action yet in reality. One suggestion raises in this study is that the international alliance of TFT LCD industry between Taiwan and Japan should be expanded further, to share technologies and resources, to reduce operational risks, so as to reach win-win prospects.
