The theatre avant-garde is opposed to the conceptions of rational structure and linear development of the classical drama. In view of a pedagogy for theatre avant-grade, this paper aims to enlighten students through the concept of “ant-theatre”—how to be free from the binarism of logic/anti-logic, or reason/ant9-reason. It is interested in exploring the historical background and authorial convictions of theatre avant-grade wit a focus on Engène Ionesco’s La Cantatrice Chauve. As a model of pedagogy, its purpose is fourfold: how to teach the ambiguity of the theme, the illogic of plot development, the obscurity of character identities, and the disappearance of language essence. In addition, the pedagogy is augmented with an analysis of a survey, designed to assess effect of teaching theatre avant-garde.
