During the past several decades, various movements and revolutionary changes in this field of language teaching had taken place. This experiment was designed to investigate the relationship between students' field dependencel independence tendency and the nature of learning materials. The subjects were on hundred and four students of Tamkang University. The subjects were first asked to take the GEFf (Group Embedded Figure Test) to determine their FDIFI tendency. And then they were arranged randomly to work on two different kinds of learning materials: one was the material of procedurellow-Ievel of critical thinking and the other, of high-level of critical thinking. At the end of the experiment, the survey and interviews of students' attitude toward learning materials were conducted. The results indicated that student's FDIFI tendency was not statistically significant in determining their learning performance on different types of learning materials: The possible explanations were provided and future implications of FDIFI were fully discussed.
