    Abstract: We present a systematic analysis of the self-focusing effects for an intense equal phase Gaussian beam propagating through a nonlinear medium. By solving the differential Iequation directly, we derived the critical power, self-focusing length as well as the intensity profile as a function of r and z analytically. For the case where the diffraction effects are negligible, we obtain exactly the same results as those given by Chen and Shiau after taking appropriate limiting processes.
