    Abstract: The small-signal gain factor of a high-gain laser as a function of time has been calculated theoretically. It is found that the decay time of the gain factor is much shorter than the natural transition time for the laser atoms. The result was checked with experimental gain measurements by the modified ASE technique for a CuBr laser. Excellent agreement was obtained.
