The article describes how a web-based courseware is developed to help students
convert abstract symbols into real world phenomena. The Chain Model integrating content domain needs, active learning, and web-based interactive simulations for kinematics
courseware design is described. A common problem in learning kinematics is that students exercise equations and graphs as mathematical problems without knowing how these representations are related to real motion. The courseware is used in a cooperative learning environment to engage students in an active learning process. The benefits of using web-based instruction with Java components are also discussed.
