On the basis of spectral evidence, the polar constituents of the primitive liverwort Mastigophora-diclados which grows in the area of Yuenyang Lake were determined to be: α-&β-herbertenols (6, 5), 2,3-herbertenediol(7) and (-)-sandaracopimaric acid (8). By GC/MS examination, the oil of M. woodsii whichwas collected in high altitude mountains was also found to contain the former three sesquiterpenes as statedabove. Hence these results suggested that the chemical marker of Mastigophora genus may be herbertane-type compounds. The present chemical findings would certainly help the taxonomic placement of theMastigophora genus, which has long been arguable from the view point of botanists.
