A novel discotic core, 1,3,5-triphenyl-2,4,6-triphenylethynylbenzene, with nonidentical peripheral moieties was achieved by cyclotrimerization of 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne. Being hybrids of the multiaryl- and multiynyl-benzene mesogenic cores, compounds with this core exhibit the hexagonal columnar mesophase.
