Abstract: A homologous series of chiral esters I(m, n) derived from (2S)-2-(6-hydroxy-2-naphthyl)propionic acid were synthesized as chiral dopants. Some macroscopic properties in ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures doped with 10% (by mole) of I(m, n) of the above dopants were investigated. Large Ps values were obtained in the range of 30.1 nC/cm2 to 7.5 nC/cm2 when measured at 10°C below the SA -S c* transition temperature. The Ps values are largely dependent on the alkyl chain length at the external side of the chiral centre. The relationship between physical property and the nature of alkyl chain length is discussed.
