To reach maximal profit, the optimal layout of a production line is considered by using both traditional machines and flexible machines. A mixed integer-programming model is constructed and the step-by-step algorithm to solve this problem is also devel–oped. In addition, it is discussed that the operation cost of a machine doesn’t include the idle or break-down situation while the maintenance cost for a broken machine should be considered, is proposed to extend the field of applicability in this study.Indeed. this paper provides the practical and important tool to the production line designer with profound insights.
