Information Systems (IS) have been moved from serving as a support function to a point where they may influence corporate strategy. The strength of this influence, however, is partially determined by the role of lS executives. Understanding the role of lS executives may better guide the firm through the transformation stage. The purpose of this study is to investigate the background and job activities of the IS executives in Taiwanese Companies. The data for this study consisted of the responses of IS executive from 193 major Taiwan companies and was collected through questionnaires. Results indicated the lack of business background of the IS executives in Taiwan. Compared to the U.S. IS executives, Taiwan's IS executives spent more time in technical issues and spent less time in managerial and strategic issues. The IS executives emphasis on technical role and deemphasis on managerial and strategic issues. Results also indicated that the IS executives with sophisticated experience and IS executives who took charge of mature information systems would perceive the role of IS executives in multithread way. The result suggest that the business background of IS executives and the role of IS are increased in importance. Understanding the role of IS enables a firm to use IS to gain competitive advantage. IS executives should develop their business operation, management and strategic knowledge, skill and experience in different aspects. The result has implications for the design of MIS curriculum. Education programs must ref1ect the broad business and IT backgrounds that will be required by organizations in the future.
