Abstract: The purpose of this research aimed to investigate the crucial skills professional coaches place on each position in volleyball. Questionnaires were administered to Chinese Taipei (TPE) national volleyball team coaches with international competition experiences. We used analytic hierarchy process (AHP), geometric means, and matrix multiplication to appraise positions and skills in volleyball. In addition, Mann-Whitney U Test was used to determine whether the weightings of coaches were significantly different by gender. Results revealed the top three skill weightings include set, dig, and reception. Setter pertained the most important position. Moreover, no significant difference of skill weighting between male and female coaches was detected. Overall, our results suggested that the AHP could be used to identify the weightings of various volleyball skills, and the results obtained could provide practical application as decision-making for performance evaluations.
