    Abstract: How to secure fair and effective protection of the interests of future generations has become a focal point of academic interest in recent years. This paper offers a theoretical argument to address the importance of establishing an institution of intergenerational justice. More importantly, this essay also provides institutional options on how to resolve the deficit in our representative democracy in order to establish institutional arrangements for intergenerational justice, so as to achieve sustainability. The paradoxes and challenges involved in protecting rights for future generations are especially a main concern of this work. Finally, it is emphasized that a combination of representative and deliberative elements of democracy in decision-making might be a desirable solution to enhance the quality of the democratic system.
