Taiwan began accepting the university admissions of Chinese students in 2011. Between 2011 ~ 2016, the number of enrolled Chinese students in Taiwan grew to 7,813 people.

This paper will start by examining the self-orientation of the Taiwanese society from the perspective of the civil society in Taiwan and policies on Chinese students to determine the current consensus in the Taiwanese civil society. The background to the policies on Chinese students formulated by the Taiwanese government will then be used to establish the current official attitude to Chinese students in Taiwan and future prospects.

Chinese students who have been living in Taiwan for more than three years will also be interviewed using the in-depth interview method to understand their life in Taiwan as well as their views and experiences of Taiwanese society.

By exploring the interactions between Taiwanese society and Chinese students, this paper attempts to see if Taiwan can open a third and different channel for communication with China outside of military and politics. In addition to improving cross-strait relations, such interactions may offer a way to rethink conflicts in policy and lead to the development of a more efficient governance model.
