In the past few years, China’s economic investment in Brazil has become more prevalent as Brazil continues to grow as a global power. This development raises important questions regarding not only China’s and the United States future foreign policy toward Brazil, but the United States response to China’s growing presence and influence in the region’s largest rising economy. Sino-Brazilian trade reached record levels in 2010, and China has now taken the place of the top trading partner with the South American giant, a place formerly held by the United States. Even though the United States remains the dominant power in the Americas, the region is no longer its exclusive sphere of influence. This paper will attempt to analyze present and future relations between China and Brazil, as well as Brazil and the United States, and whether Brazil’s growing partnership with China will affect its political and economic relation with the United States. Also, it will analyze if whether China’s growing influence and presence in America’s backyard has any impact in the Sino-American relations.
