When applying for patents, companies should considerperforming patent portfolios as a means of integrat-ing their patent strategy to shape their overall businessstrategy. This is an important issue for any company inpursuit of enhanced operational performance becausethe wholeraison d’être behind the application of patentsis the anticipation of achieving maximum competitiveadvantage. A prerequisite for such a company is a deci-sion analysis model of patent portfolios because this hasthe added advantage of being readily applicable to theevaluation of the quality of its competitors’ portfolios;thus, by understanding both itself and its competitors,a company can attain a superior position. To demon-strate this, we examinepatent priority networks (PPNs)formed through patent family members and claimed pri-ority patents, performing a model of patent portfolioanalysis and then going on to determine the algorithms. We suggest that information retrieved from this networkcan provide a useful reference tool for decision-makingby company CEOs, CTOs, R&D managers, and intellectualproperty managers.
