This study designed the Chinese FingerReader, a lightweight portable device that can read Chinese text aloud in real time. The device can be worn on the index finger to read printed text from books or other objects without requiring a complex setup or keyboard operation. The Chinese FingerReader features two reading modes: direct reading mode, which requires the user to target a printed character and initiate optical character recognition by pressing a capacitance switch with the thumb. This mode is particularly helpful for foreigners’ learning Chinese characters. Another is guidance reading mode, which employs haptic feedback to guide the user to continue reading. This mode can help visually impaired users to listen to printed Chinese text
