There is now a trend in modern society of a tendency towards the materialistic within the home dwelling environment, we may have gradually forgotten that originally the home was a place for emotional cohesion. Therefore, to find the love and care given by the family and convey them through architectural space, this study started with the exploration of myself to discover memories of the home through the body, and to generate a flowing passage from time, in order to connect emotions from our memories to the present time, and allowing “The Home of Memories” to become the affirmation of the future home.
To achieve the research purpose mentioned above, the following two ways to construct a home was found through the preliminary literature reviews and case studies, including: 1) Memory and Space: using memories as the investigated site and mnemonics to develop the place, images and words in order to discover the home within our hearts; 2) Spatial Aesthetics of Montage: from 2D, 3D to 4D dimensions, the perception of space was examined, and through theories and case studies about architectural spaces, a conversion method for overlapping collage, time-space sequences and a passage for emotional association was developed.
From my own experiences of the two homes I have lived in, I explored the design of “The Home of Memories” with the following steps: 1) discovering the memories of the home; 2) reproduction of the memories; 3) generating the elements of the home; 4) representation of the home. During the childhood period, the body’s habits in different uses of space were integrated from the memory of “playing”. During the teenager period, the dynamic and flexible spaces were transformed from the memories of “sharing” of learning. Thereby I readily developed the required spatial elements that were transformed from the memories. Finally, I chose the empty land left by my deceased grandfather as the design site. Through integrating my own and my family’s memories of the home, I created “The Home of Memories” with emotions of the home from the past and the present environment.
This study is a record process of designing a home, intended for people to re-think about the home dwelling environment, and for designers to unlock the clasp within their hearts to understand the needs for dialogues and communication. Future studies will involve the bodily perception of space, environment and memories to realize that we usually rely too much on sight. From this, we should incorporate smell, taste, touch and hearing in order to remember the memories of atmospheres, and through material, light and sound textures, the limitations of the sight can be transcended, bringing the home environment to a more spiritual and soulful level.
