In Taiwan, on average every 1.7 persons have a motorcycle. Motorcycles are in large quantity. The injury severity for the accidents involved with motorcycles is serious; approximately 90% of road accidents involve motorcycles. Motorcycle safety education is an important issue in Taiwan. The motorcycle safety problem for young people is serious particularly. This study developed a motorcycle riding simulation game system using a smartphone platform to investigate whether the game could assist younger players (i.e., learners) to acquire motorcycle safety cognition. The questionnaires and riding behaviors are used to measure players’ learning performances. The analysis results of the pretest questionnaire, posttest questionnaire, and riding behaviors recorded in the game system showed whether or not the participants had driving licenses that the level of participants’ motorcycle safety cognition before the learning experiment was insufficient. Participants did not know the meaning of certain traffic markings, signs and signals identifying the minor road at an intersection. The Right of way rules at intersections were another problem. After playing the game, the improvement in the participants’ understanding of the meaning of markings, signs and signals was very significant. However, improvement was limited in learning right of way rules at intersections not controlled by signals.
