The Harmony Search (HS) Algorithm is conceptualized by using the musical process of searching for a perfect state of harmony. The HS algorithm does not required the setting of initial values of decision variables and was used stochastic random search. In addition, the HS algorithm is simple in concept, few parameters needed, and easy implementation. The Improved Harmony Search (IHS) Algorithm for structural optimization is developed in this study. IHS employs a novel method that enhances accuracy and search capability of harmony search (HS) algorithm. The harmony memory consideration rate (HMCR) and pitch adjustment rate (PAR) are linearly adapted by the improved mechanisms proposed. The distance bandwidth (BW) is dynamically adjusted to favor exploration in the early stages and exploitation during the final stages of the search process.
The FORTRAN and APDL of ANSYS software are integrated into a systematic IHS optimization program. The optimization problem can be transformed into a mathematical function. Minimum weight design will be developed in six numerical examples. Then the optimum deign of structures can be obtained by IHS algorithm. The results of IHS algorithm are better than other references in the examples.
