Taiwan wind code is modified from ASCE 7-02 (2002) and AIJ (1996). In practical use, it sometimes is too conservative and it is not conservative enough for certain cases. Expert system uses artificial neural networks to predict wind coefficients and wind force spectra, but the process is not transparent and lacks formulas.
This thesis use the aerodynamic database of Wind Engineering Research Center of Tamkang University to fit formulas for wind coefficients and wind spectra that are required for acrosswind and torsional wind load calculations. The results of wind code and aero-data based calculations are compared with the results of fitting formulas. The objective is to have accurate and explicit formulas for engineering design practices.
Regressional analysis was used to find the “fitting formula” of the acrosswind and totional wind coefficients based on the contents of the aerodynamic database.Taking the nondimensionalizing method of engineering practice and form of the original wind code formulas into concideration, “wind code modification formulas” were found later. The pattern used to fit acrosswind spectra was similar to the formula used by Clark & Vickery (1972) for the acrosswind spectra of circular cross-section chimneys. On the other hand, the formula form used for torsional wind spectra was composed using the formula of alongwind and acrosswind spectra. The results are superior to the Taiwan wind code in general.
Based on the wind load calculation method in the 2013 ABRI project, Applications of Aerodynamic Database on Building Design Wind Loads (II), the acrosswind and torsional wind loads calculated using the wind code modification formulas are compared with both the aero-data based and wind code calculations. The analized cases cover all the side ratios and aspect ratio 2, 3 and 6.
Results of acrosswind wind loads are poor for deep rectangle buildings at 180m. Other cases are close to the aero-data based calculations. As for the torsional wind loads, the calculation results are more conservative. The not conservative problem of the current wind code has been improved in general.
