During the WWII, Japan adopted ''Northward'' and ''Southward'' policy in order to expand its sphere of influence. Furthermore, under the Southward advance policy, Taiwan was involved as a bridgehead to move for connecting with Southern China, and Southeast Asia. The purpose of Japanese continental policy was to invade Mainland China.
“The Southern Expansion Doctrine”practically started before World War II. At that time, Japan initiated to construct Taiwan as a military base under the ambition of Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Furthermore, since World War II, Taiwan played three different roles as “Heavy industry backup station of Japan military supply”,“Stronghold to approach resource of Southeast Asia” and “Supporting unit for Japanese cultural exchange under Southern advance policy”. The Office of Taiwan Governor-General specifically implemented all related construction and policy developments based on above roles. As for the relationship between Taiwan and Southeast Asia, it was developed by diversification based on the principle of supporting Japan as its mother country.
This thesis focuses on the relationships between Taiwan and Southeast Asia under Southern advance policy of Japan during World War II. The method of analysis will be used the documentary approach and historical approach.
The research findings would be as follows:
1.The relationships between Taiwan and Southeast Asia during World War II were deeply affected by modern Japan expansion policy.
2.The process of Pacific War actually facilitated the further communication between Taiwan and Southeast Asia.
3.The war brought the industry relationships between Taiwan and Southeast Asia to change or transformation.
