For decades, the Dominican Republic took a passive foreign policy, in line with the ideology of its rulers, although some of them realized the need to strengthen ties with other nations, they were largely limited to establishing links with other countries in the region and some other nations that historically maintained traditional relations with the country, that is, external relations did not develop in a consistent manner according to modernization and globalization. This led to a self-isolation of the nation to the international community until the late twentieth century.
Over the period from 2004 to 2012, international relations of the Dominican Republic were remarkably invigorated. Foreign policy formed a fundamental part of government programs, which under active diplomacy enabled to establish bilateral relations with many countries and strengthen the traditional ties of friendship and cooperation with existing ones as well as set the country to those processes that enable it effectively for integrating to issues of the global agenda.
The objective of this paper is studying the factors that influenced on the evolution of these diplomatic relations, specifically with Asian countries, which were greatly potentiated the economic, commercial, cultural, technological and political exchange.
