Abstract: For a rail bridge with simply supported ends, very short overhanging beams usually exist at both ends of the bridge. As a train passes through the overhanging beams of two adjacent bridges at high speeds, the overhanging beams would be subjected to intensive vibrations due to their free ends. The vibration may build up the dynamic response of the train-bridge system. In this study, a finite element modeling that can account for the dynamic interaction of train-bridge coupling system will be used to simulate the dynamic response of the coupling system. To investigate the influence of overhanging beams on the dynamic response of train-bridge system, the dynamic analysis of the vehicle-bridge interaction systems for two kinds of simple beams with or without overhanging beams are presented. From the numerical results, the overhanging beams as shown play a key role in amplifying the response of the train-bridge system.
