In the target of IEEE 802.16 standard, it enables users to access Internet by wireless and provides the fine QoS with high transmission rate and high stability to mobile users. Therefore, it is more complex to handle the frequency allocation from wireless network systems than wired systems. The design of scheduler for wireless networks is also more difficult. The reason is the radio frequency management should make more precise distribution to the limited bandwidth resources in wireless networks. Moreover, due to the radio frequency is easy to be interfered and the quality of radio channel is frequently changed, the scheduler need s to make a suitable bandwidth arrangement for all communication requirements. The scheduler must provide the necessary QoS to all subscribers and the best system performance. The purpose of IEEE 802.16j standard tries to enhance the performance of IEEE 802.16. It includes a new role of wireless networks, Relay Station (RS) to decrease the whole costs of system build-up. It is also to increase the flexibility of network topologies. However, the operation mechanism of scheduler still is an open issue in IEEE 802.16j. Therefore, the main purpose of this proposal is to design a fine scheme of IEEE 802.16j scheduler. It expects the proposed mechanism of the scheduler will provide a good QoS to all active subscribers and a nice performance in radio frequency bandwidth. To accomplish this purpose, the topic of this proposal is “A QoS-based Adaptive Bandwidth Scheduling Mechanism for IEEE 802.16j Networks”. We will spend two years to realize the design of proposed mechanism gradually. In the first year, the research and design target will focus on the scheduling scheme for the adaptive distribution and management of the radio frequency bandwidths. The sub-topic of first year is “An Adaptive Bandwidth Scheduling Scheme for IEEE 802.16j Networks”. Based on the results of an adaptive bandwidth scheduler in first year, we will keep continuously to research and design a QoS guarantied scheduling mechanism in second year. The sub-topic of second year is “A Hybrid QoS Guarantied Scheduling Mechanism for IEEE 802.16j Networks”. Both the researches and designs in two years, this proposal will apply some simulation experiences and comparison analysis to prove the advantages and efficiency of the proposed algorithms and schemes. We expect the proposed mechanisms can provide the improved techniques to the industries of mobile communications and wireless networks.
