The Medieval Chinese plays an extremely important role in the history of Chinese grammar. Carrying the grammatical features of Archaic Chinese, the Medieval Chinese had a profound influence on the developments of Late Medieval period. The evolution of place word is one of the major themes for the research of Ancient Chinese. Characters like “suo”, “xu”, “chu” and “bian” could be used after the personal pronoun, while “suo”, “xu” and “chu” are often combined with the word“he” to form pronouns such as“he suo”“he xu” and“he chu”. While the research studies the certain commonality shared by these characters in the Middle Chinese, it also aims to discover the differences in their grammatical functions and semantic representations. The objective of the study is to find out whether the phenomenon was the result of diachronic evolution or of the synchronic differences of different dialects. The project we will focus on is titled“The Research of place words “suo”, “xu”, “chu” and “bian” in Medieval Chinese”
