In recent decades, the advances of electronic communications technology have led to serious effect of electromagnetic waves from the widely use of all kinds of communications, electronic equipments and products. In order to avoid the detrimental effects of electromagnetic waves to the physiological or psychological human body and other electronic equipment, effectively shielding of electromagnetic waves has become an important research topic. Metal, conductive polymer, conductive composites or conductive surface treatment are often used for shielding electromagnetic waves. In this study, steel fibers, graphite and barium ferrite were utilized as ingredients to cement concrete material to increase the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. By varying the contents of steel fibers, graphite and barium ferrite, specimens were produced in the laboratory to evaluate the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness in frequency range from 30 MHz to 1800 MHz, and develop a conductive concrete material with good shielding characteristics.
Based on the results of this study, the addition of steel fibers and graphite both can increase the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of the specimen for the 30 MHz ~ 1800 MHz electromagnetic wave frequency range. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of specimen improves with increasing steel fibers contents and higher electromagnetic wave frequency value. The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of specimen also improves with increasing of graphite content, but the addition of graphite will reduce its mechanical strength and workability. The addition of Barium ferrite is not very effective for electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. Barium ferrite is less effective than graphite at the same contents for shielding effectiveness. The results of this study show that the best shielding effectiveness reaches 68 dB around the frequency of 900MHz. For all specimens with more than
1.0% steel fibers and more than 15% graphite, the shielding effectiveness generally can reach 60 dB. When the frequency is near 1800MHz, specimen with more than 0.5% steel fibers and more than 10% graphite, the shielding effectiveness could reach 60 dB or more.
