After Soviet Union collapsed, the national power and international status of Russia dropped. Russia also lost its southern protection, which caused lots of security threats from the south. In this situation, the Russian foreign policy gradually changed from Atlanticism to Eurasianism. Eurasianists believe that Central Asia is an important strategic area of Russia. Russia needs to ensure the stability in Central Asia, and then Russia can maintain its own national security and interests. Russia’s strategic significance of security in Central Asia is to reconstruct the southern border, and the strategic economic significance is to monopolize the energy markets of Central Asia.
This thesis focuses on the role of Tajikistan in Russia’s Central Asia strategy, and the relations between Russia and Tajikistan. As a result of Tajik civil war, Tajikistan has become the starting point where Russia got itself involved in Central Asian affairs after Soviet Union collapsed. It can be said that Tajikistan is the springboard for Russia’s return back to Central Asia. Meanwhile, Tajikistan is the most vulnerable country in Central Asia; Drug trafficking and terrorism proliferation from Afghanistan has spread to Tajikistan as well as to the whole Central Asia and has become threats to Russia; therefore, Tajikistan is seen as the front line by Russia to ensure the stability of Central Asia region. On economic aspect, Russia tries to control Tajik hydropower development and the immigration relations, so that Russia can consolidate its regional position, contend with other international powers, and even improve its economy.
