      <title>Burnout and Higher Education: Cases based in Taiwan and Mainland China</title>
      <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/110334</link>
      <description>title: Burnout and Higher Education: Cases based in Taiwan and Mainland China abstract: Burnout and death from overwork have recently been an important issue to faculties of universities in both Taiwan and Mainland China during recent years. However, there is neither ample discussion on such issue based in Taiwan and Mainland China nor are sufficient solutions provided to address it. In this study, we illustrate recent phenomenon of faculties' burnout and death from work at universities in Taiwan and Mainland China. We then introduce double-recovery process along with explaining the notion how such process benefits the reduction of burnout. Finally, we through job re-design perspective provide three pragmatic solutions that benefits faculties' implementation of double-recovery process as a strategical thinking for decision makers of universities in both Taiwan and Mainland China to resolve their faculties' burnout and death from overwork situation.

      <title>Privileged Migrants Transformation: Young Taiwanese Skilled Migrants in China</title>
      <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/110147</link>
      <description>title: Privileged Migrants Transformation: Young Taiwanese Skilled Migrants in China abstract: During the last few decades, working abroad became a common phenomenon in the daily lives of Taiwanese people. It is estimated that around 850,000 Taiwanese business people, Taiwanese expatriates and their relocated family members are currently residing in China. For a long time, Taiwanese expatriates were seen as privileged migrants in China in terms of high-income earners and for being hired in a higher position in the Taiwanese companies than their Chinese coworkers. Yet this might gradually begin to change as many other Asian countries’ economy continue to rise while the recent economy in Taiwan remains relatively stagnant, pushing many young people to search for overseas jobs. &#xD;
Empirical research on younger professionals working abroad so far tended to focus on those from less-developed regions moving to well-developed countries. Little attention was given to young professionals from developed countries migrating to less-developed areas. With empirical studies on various cities in China, this paper explores how the ambiguous position of young Taiwanese skilled migrants were shaped under work “transnationalization” and under the emergence of a new regional mobility/migration regime. By doing so, this paper will examine the process of “becoming an expatriate” for young Taiwanese skilled migrants in China. It will then illustrate the privilege status they enjoyed as expatriates in the host society, and it will analyze the changes between the social status of the “new” and “old” Taiwanese expatriates in China during the last two decades. Finally, it will also show the kind of disadvantages young Taiwanese skilled migrants face in terms of family arrangement and career building.

      <title>Development of an interdisciplinary participatory design course with futures thinking for engineering students.</title>
      <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/107260</link>
      <description>title: Development of an interdisciplinary participatory design course with futures thinking for engineering students. abstract: In the future, engineers are expected to have innovative thinking and abilities of&#xD;
interdisciplinary and integration. Therefore, we combined three courses from Department of&#xD;
Civil Engineering, Graduate Institute of Building and Planning and Department of Mechanical&#xD;
Engineering at National Taiwan University (NTU). The courseware was designed and developed&#xD;
jointly by instructors from fields of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, and&#xD;
Futures Studies. In this study, students were asked to develop an environment-improving proposal&#xD;
for an old community in Taipei city. The reflection from teachers as well as the feedbacks from&#xD;
students on teaching and learning were collected and analyzed. The material can be served as&#xD;
references to curriculum development and improvement for future work. After courses, we&#xD;
provided commands of interdisciplinary and courses design. Students did demonstrate abilities of&#xD;
interdisciplinary thinking, long-term planning, team work, and innovative design. Interdisciplinary&#xD;
communication and peer learning were the biggest gain of courses.

      <title>Developing an engineering course for fostering future-oriented interdisciplinary team design skills.</title>
      <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/107256</link>
      <description>title: Developing an engineering course for fostering future-oriented interdisciplinary team design skills. abstract: The rapid advancement of technology and changes in society in recent decades have made future&#xD;
engineering challenges harder to predict than ever. On the other hand, some elements crucial to cultivating&#xD;
problem-solving abilities targeting future issues can be readily identified: teamwork, innovation across multiple&#xD;
disciplines, future-oriented thinking, and creativity. Therefore, it is necessary to help civil engineering students&#xD;
develop these abilities. This paper reports an ongoing effort in the Department of Civil Engineering at National&#xD;
Taiwan University (NTU) on developing a course that intends to foster future-oriented team design power among&#xD;
students with a variety of expertise. Professors and experts from the fields of civil engineering, architecture,&#xD;
mechanical engineering, futures studies, and education are invited to co-teach and help develop the course&#xD;
contents. A student-centered, project-based approach is employed for students to learn in teams, with a team&#xD;
project theme of how to make the NTU campus more sustainable through Building Information&#xD;
Modeling-enabled design.

      <title>Successful Recovery Experience and Burnout</title>
      <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/106526</link>
      <description>title: Successful Recovery Experience and Burnout abstract: We proposed the synergistic effect of a successful recovery experience on a future recovery experience to extend the conservation of resources theory (COR) by discussing how the outcome of a successfully experienced recovery (e.g., increased positive affect after massage) benefits two separate specific recovery experiences, relaxation (e.g., sleep quality) and psychological detachment from work, to reduce burnout. The theoretical background was rooted in a combined theoretical notion of the COR and the effort recovery model (E-R model). The proposed hypothesis was examined in 216 randomly selected blue-collar workers who were required to expend high levels of physical effort at work. The analytical results of this study contribute to the current literature in three ways. First, we theoretically and empirically extend the COR by proposing that resources could benefit one another. In other words, the future resource gains are built upon the initial resource gains. Second, we propose the synergistic effect of a successful recovery experience on a future recovery experience in reducing burnout by showing that the outcome of a successfully experienced recovery benefits the efficacy of other recovery experiences, which enable people to replenish psychological and physiological resources more effectively and consequently reduce burnout. Finally, we pragmatically suggest the importance of providing recovery mechanisms (e.g., activity, facilitation, and service) in the work environment to ensure that employees can easily experience successful recovery from the provided recovery mechanisms. We also provide suggestions for future research.
