      <description>title: Campus climate: College students' attitude towards homosexuality in Taiwan abstract: All people should have equal rights. Educators must make sure that everyone is included and is treated fairly. Higher education institutions are considered more liberal and tolerant, yet there are marginalized students, such as those from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. In November 2018, the Taiwanese electorate passed referendums to prevent recognition of same-sex marriages in the Civil Code and to restrict teaching about LGBT issues. We witnessed the heartbreaking results of a referendum on the question, in which a majority of Taiwanese people voted against same-sex marriage. This study is to investigate to understand people's attitudes toward the LGBT community on campus, analyze the attitudinal factors and seek to make the campus environment more LGBT friendly in a College in Taiwan.

      <description>title: A Different Story to Share”: Asian American English Teachers in Taiwan and Idealized “Nativeness” in EFL abstract: In a broader context where English is marketed as a desirable product of consumption, hiring English speakers as language teachers and de facto cultural ambassadors is a common practice in some East Asian countries. This paper investigates how 20 self-identified Asian American teachers in Taiwan teaching English in local schools wrestle with the positionality of their racialized selves and idealized “nativeness.” Using an informal interview approach, a grounded theory framework, and narrative analysis, we investigated how participants made sense of their Asian American-ness in the ELT profession in Taiwan. Findings include complex feelings involving the image of Asian Americans, strategic language use to construct Asian-American-in-Taiwan identities, and unique interpretations of teaching U.S. culture. We discuss the emotional labor and strategic discourses these teachers undertook to convert their cultural and linguistic capital and offer suggestions for professional and curriculum development.

In particular, Chinese American historical books lack extensive analysis. It is important to reflect cultural accuracy in literature and to help children develop clear concepts of self and others by providing precise cultural and physical characteristics of people. While cultural authenticity allows children the opportunity to see a reflection of real experiences within a book instead of seeing stereotypes or misrepresentations, obtaining correct information about a certain time period can help children to see images of immigration accurately represented in literature. Using the Confucian delineation of interpersonal relationships as the major criterion of cultural authenticity, this article examines three currently available children’s picturebooks set in the historical period between 1848 and 1885. In addition to exploring how Chinese Americans’ interpersonal relationships are portrayed in these children’s historical books, this article argues for more proactive inclusion of the diversity in selection of picturebooks.

      <description>title: Animal, All too Animal: Incest as Instincts and Violence within Institutions abstract: This paper discusses Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy through the lens of Heidegger and Deleuze. For Heidegger, animality is a life form lower than Dasein and capitivated within instincts. Does the claim that animals cannot die suggest a continuation of life? In a way, the organismic life (organism, organization) is mechanistic, programmed, and technologized. I intend to explore the relationship between life instinct and technology as a mode of unconcealing. How does the revelation of the secrets of a crime parallel the essential secrets of Dasein? To what extent technology responds to the call of an institution? Are instinct and institution operative together underneath the structure of life? In Larsson’s trilogy, the heroine, as a hacker, solves the crime not only through technology but also through intuition and, albeit her anti-social tendency, a kind of institution. At some level, Salander’s Hacker Republic provides an institutional milieu in which instincts develops to set a system of justice. Strangely, sexual violence and social institution can be understood within the same framework. In Desert and Other Texts, Deleuze defines institution as a satisfied instinct. This satisfaction of desire is related to human or animal rights. Can the positive society, the Hacker Republic, also do violence to humanism, and hence problematize the distinction between institutions of the law and institutions of desire? For Larsson’s criminals, evolution theories are intertwined with their sexual crimes. The victims’ survival, seen as the survival of a species, has predicated upon the will to existence, which, I should say, is a struggle of our instincts, intuition, and institutions.

      <description>title: The Collapse of the Soviet Century: Cinema's Finite Look into the Infinite abstract: 2017 is the centenary of the Soviet Revolution. It is also the speculative year in which Alexei German Jr.’s 2015 film, Under Electric Clouds, is set. German’s film, like good science fiction, reflects on the present and recent past. This paper connects German’s film to others from the former USSR that appeared in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union, notably Kira Muratova’s The Asthenic Syndrome (1990), Artur Aristakisyan’s Palms (1994), and Alexander Sokurov’s Russian Ark (2002). Linking these films is the withdrawal of vision into blindness, where ‘vision’ is presented in both senses: as plain sight and as teleology, that conceptual idea of the progress of history. The writing of history, howevercontentiously, offers the retrospective representation of past events. Cinema operates in the present tense, excepting historical recreation as a costume pageant which follows the re-writing of history as literature. Cinema of its time forms the artefacts of history, the manner of looking, or representing, at a moment in time. What these films demonstrate is the persistent obscuring of vision, where vision is torn away from the signifying criteria of language and politics, leaving only the persistence of looking. German’s film reiterates that continued withdrawal of vision amid the drastic reshaping of the former Soviet Bloc. As the iconography of the most teleological of political systems is gradually erased, its symbols nothing but fleeting, finite entities, German’s cinema maintains a relentless gaze into a future history that is both infinite and blind.

Instances of recycling repair were extracted from comparative speech corpora of naturally occurring, face-to-face Mandarin and French interaction. By the interactional prosody approach plus impressionistic judgments, each repair was annotated for its prosodic realization, including relative pitch height, duration, silent pauses and other sound cues for initiating the repair. Through comparing results of acoustic measurements, the discussion focuses on the similarities and differences in the sound realization while initiating and accomplishing recycling repair in both languages. It is suggested that interlocutors of the two languages may orient to rather different methods of initiating the repair in that French speakers tend to incorporate lengthening at the repair initiating sites plus optional filled pauses, while Mandarin speakers employ quick cut-offs for repair initiation, followed by immediate repair.

By approaches of interactional prosody and conversational phonetics toward the analysis of sound realization of Mandarin repair in natural conversation, this study provides a preliminary exploration on how the combination of detailed prosodic features forms various sound patterns in reflecting the interactional aspect and sequential organization of Mandarin conversation.&#xD;
&#xD;
The current study examines the particular example of recycling repair, defined as “a repeat of part of a conversational turn,” among all methods used in accomplishing Mandarin same-turn self-repair. The data corpus consists of 260 cases of recycling repair culled from a collection of both video- and audio-taped naturally occurring Mandarin conversation. For each recycling, acoustic measurements, including duration, pitch, silence, cut-off and lengthening were carried out by using Praat. Additional judgments would be made based on the analyst’s impressionistic interpretation of these acoustic cues. After taking measurements, the results were compared and the sound patterns that emerged from recyclings of the same sound manifestation were identified.&#xD;
&#xD;
By a qualitative case-study methodology, this thesis reports 6 sound patterns and 3 sub-patterns based on 112 cases of Mandarin recyclings selected. The findings from the current research highlight the interaction-specific, sequence-specific, and function-specific examples of recyclings in relation to the use of the 6 main prosodic patterns. 3 sub-patterns that share some similarity with 2 of the 6 sound patterns in terms of interactional function were further identified. The result from the current exploratory work on the correlation between sound patterns in Mandarin recyclings and interaction contributes significantly to an interdisciplinary study that focuses on broadening the interactional linguistic theory by paying close attention to the sound patterns in natural conversation.

      <title>Starting from the Family: Gender Relations and Black Resistance in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun</title>

      <description>title: Starting from the Family: Gender Relations and Black Resistance in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun abstract: A Raisin in the Sun (1959) is the first play written by an African American woman to be produced in a Broadway theater, and the writer, Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965), became the first black playwright to win the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. Set in a segregated Chicago neighborhood in the 1950s, A Raisin in the Sun realistically reflects the historical background of the African American civil rights movement. This paper examines gender relations in the Younger family through an analysis of the family structure, which symbolically represents black society during the period of the civil rights movement, in order to problematize the dual oppression of gender and race. Divided into three body sections, the paper first provides a feminist critique of the patriarchal ideology disguised as matriarchy and antiracism. By centering on Big Walter and Walter, the second section argues that the Younger family is male headed, and the establishment of masculinity is important for black resistance against racism at the time. The third section constitutes a new image of African American women by exploring the way they participate in the social movement and how they achieve gender liberation, and it especially focuses on Mama Lena Younger, who helps her family unite to resist racism according to her standpoint as a black woman. In short, while A Raisin in the Sun celebrates African American dignity and pride at the end, it also successfully demystifies the ideology of matriarchy by revealing the male-headed structure of the Younger family and destroys the stereotype of matriarchs by showing Lena's feminist thought.

      <description>title: Exploring Hakka culture and ethnic relationships through the Baoshan Reservoir protest event abstract: The Baoshan (first) Reservoir was constructed in 1981, to fulfill the need of the Hsinchu Science-Based Industrial Park and to underpin socioeconomic development in Hsinchu area. However, when the reservoir was built, the process of land expropriation was not as smooth as the residence expected. While the land over one meter of the reservoir was not counted into the expropriation area, 300 residents was not satisfied with the mode of handling and have kept protesting it for more than thirty years. The majority residents of this area are Hakka people, who migrated to Boshan, Hsinchu area for more than three hundred years. Being suffered from the conflicts in between the Min people and Hakka people, pluc with the indigenous people historically, the ethnic group finally settled in Hsinchu, and took Taiwan as their hometown. After the ethnic consciousness rose in 1980s in Taiwan, the Hakka ethnic group has started to gone through a series of social movements. The Hakka mostly live in the hills or margined in the edge of the city, they got easily impacted by the urban development and forced to take the side-effect of the development, such as pollution or land expropriation. The Baoshan First Reservoir event was one of these cases. This study, thus, aims to explore the cultural impact that may happen in the process of protesting the land expropriation and how residents perceive themselves regarding the ethnic identity and the relationships with other ethnic groups.

      <title>Baudelaire and Houellebecq: A Romantic Cemetery and an Apocalyptic Utopia</title>

      <description>title: Baudelaire and Houellebecq: A Romantic Cemetery and an Apocalyptic Utopia abstract: The term ‘cemetery’ in Romanticism is often used to explore the feelings associated with mourning and death, a stark reminder of the human condition if we follow the idea of Novalis that death is the romantic principle of life. However, Baudelaire may hold a different view of the term. In his poems, the term ‘cemetery’ evokes not only an anxious and pessimistic vision, but a posthumous life to which the poet is doomed, a conviction (condemnation) to live. For Romantic poets like Baudelaire or Novalis, literature stands for a spiritual quest and elevation, a transcendental position to which the contemporary French writer Michel Houellebecq’s view of literature runs counter. In the end of his science fiction The Possibility of an Island (2005), he builds a post-apocalyptic cemetery where the Earth is beset by a series of manmade and natural disasters. Unlike Baudelaire, who opposes esthetics and reality, Houellebecq seems to delicately and concretely transfer Romantic poetic ideals to the real world in a social science fiction which speculates about human behaviors and interactions. How is it possible that with his scientific and technic attempts, the world could be utopian? And how could we call Houellebecq a Romantic writer, the self-called descendant of Baudelaire? This is also a topic of discussion in this paper.

Nevertheless, research focusing on exploring the relationship in between English instruction and study abroad that content both language and cultural experiences is spare.&#xD;
A “Junior Abroad Program” has been implemented in Tamkang University Lanyang Campus since 2007. Students from all the four disciplines of the campus are required to study abroad for one year in their junior year. Since the four disciplines have different content foci, there are doubts on the teaching and learning the content knowledge through English-medium instructions in and outside of the institution. It is my intention to understand students’ perceptions and reflections towards their on campus training of preparing them to face the challenges of study abroad, especially with the support of “English Medium Instruction” program. I would like to invites senior students to share and reflect their experiences of learning the language and cultures.&#xD;
This study, thus, aims to explore senior students’ reflections on English-medium instruction and junior abroad experiences. As EMI is implemented in all courses on this campus, how students connect their learning experiences with the EMI program will be discussed.

      <description>title: 身體如表現：波特萊爾的步態式書寫 abstract: 本研究延伸巴爾札克的《步態原理》，透過觀察與凝視波特萊爾詩中一連串的「步態」場景與展演，假設身體步態作為詩人移動書寫的一種參照，亦即走路行徑一如創作表現，而身體移動的特殊徵候（la physiologie）一如書寫的修辭技巧（la rhétorique）。在波特萊爾進行創作的年代，巴黎正經歷一場深刻的現代化幻滅，密謀反抗改革之勢不斷在暗處凝聚，而波特萊爾這位習慣從巴黎現代生活中挖掘書寫素材的詩人，他描繪的一些平凡的人物形象，以及各種溢於言表的細節，攪渾了近一個世紀以來現代性意識形態的水面；不過，似乎很少有人真正意識到他所勾勒的形象與細節──尤其是有關移動的身體步態──在其詩語言創作所扮演的顛覆意義。本文將循著詩人的詩作，拾掇一些有利於闡明本文主題的人物形象，包含過路女子、紈袴子、漫遊者等，最後以德勒茲「無器官身體」的概念進行總結，嘗試對身體移動的步態與波特萊爾詩作之間的曖昧關係，進行一番勾勒。&#xD;
As an extension of Balzac's Theory of Gait, this article observes and contemplates a series of gaits in Baudelaire's poems, relating body gaits to writing movements just like the walking gait can be used as expressions of creative works, and the physiology of corporal movements as the rhetoric skills of writing. When Baudelaire wrote his poems, Paris was undergoing a profound disillusionment with the modernization process. Conspiracies against the big reforms were engaged clandestinely. And Baudelaire, the poet who seemed more interested in images of the folks, in details that go beyond what is written, has been looking for his writing resources in the modern life of Paris city. But few people are really aware that these images and details, especially the detailed descriptions of body gait, not only transformed the modernist ideology but played a subversive role in the poetic language. This article follows the poet's traces and works, picking up alongside some figures or images which help clarify some points of our subject, including passer-by, dandy, flâneur, etc.... In the end, we use the term of ＂body without organs＂ by Deleuze to analyze or to draw outline of ambiguous relationships between corporal movements and Baudelaire's poems.

Berman) 所建議者如此耐人尋味—吟唱詩人所謂「遠方的驛站」—帶有母語懷柔之心，殷勤接待他者。事實上，亙古以來多少譯者克服了來自遠方語言的障礙，最終只是迴音一場！抑或被霸權窒息的偏遠聲音，終究找到驛站發聲？本文將以貝爾曼翻譯批評中有關譯者倫理的觀點為主，以皮姆 (A. Pym) 翻譯史的方法論為輔，回顧與探討在五四運動前後所發生之翻譯高潮，其相關譯者在當時社會、政治、經濟、歷史與文化脈絡的醞釀之下，對翻譯理論所產生的歷史詭辯與軌變，以及譯者主體性的興衰更迭；其中，尤其針對翻譯活動對中文語言演進的生態所產生的影響提出論述。&#xD;
Hundreds of definitions of translation have been suggested over the years, but few are as intriguing as the one offered by A. Berman (1942-1991), who said that translation is the ＂inn of the remote of the troubadour, which receives strangers within the very heart of mother tongue.＂ In fact, since the dawn of humankind, how many translators have helped to surmount the barriers of distance with a translation which yet provided a mere echo-as if the voice of the remote, silenced by hegemony, finds its own voice? This article focuses on the ethics of translation, an approach to translation studies proposed by Berman and supported by A. Pym's methodology of translation history. Using their arguments about the translator's subjectivity, I focus on translations from other languages into Chinese around the time of China's May 4^th movement. Here I explore such questions as how, in the social, political, economic and historical contexts of that time, might Chinese translators have changed the historical discourses and trajectories of translation theory? How, then, was the translator's identity altered? Among other issues, I am especially interested in the impact at this time of the Chinese translations of foreign language texts, and of what one might call the ethics of foreignization, on the evolution of the Chinese language itself.
