Market Power and the Hayek Hypothesis: An Experimental Investigation

title: Market Power and the Hayek Hypothesis: An Experimental Investigation abstract: The inconsistency in the literature regarding price behavior in markets with market power suggested that traders are heterogeneous in their ability to discover and exercise their influences on market price. To examine whether inequality in subjects’ market performance can be attributed to the heterogeneity of their cognitive capacity, we adopt a single-subject experimental design and inspect whether subjects can discover and exercise their market power by withholding part of their units. We use the Cognitive Reflection Test to gauge subjects’ cognitive ability and investigate whether subjects with higher cognitive abilities will be better at exercising their market power to influence the price to gain extra profits. We observe heterogenous price behavior. However, there is no evidence that higher CRT scores were associated with better price convergence to the competitive equilibrium. Further, the revelation of information only altered some subjects’ behavior.

title: Phoenix Transformation and Adaptive Entrepreneurship: Case Study of Formosa Forges abstract: In spite of Taiwan’s unique environment, its experience can inspire other developing counterparts in successfully incubating adaptive entrepreneurship for exploiting international market opportunities. As a dominant leader in the container lock industry, Formosa Forges gets to enjoy economies of scale in manufacturing as well as providing service, building high entry barriers for late comers to surpass. In the 1980s, Formosa Forges, a developing-nation based company in the industrial sector, with the status as the market leader faced the challenges from the advanced world. Its competitors from the United States, Japan, Germany and Spain tried to follow its ways— these companies felt that by manufacturing products in China, the so-called "world's workshop", they could duplicate the results. However, after many years, no these companies has succeeded like Formosa Forges has.

title: Modularity, Product Innovation, and Consumer Satisfaction: An Agent-Based Approach abstract: The importance of modularity in product innovation is analyzed in this paper. Through simulations with an agent-based modular economic model, we examine the significance of the use of a modular structure in new product designs in terms of its impacts upon customer satisfaction and firms’ competitiveness. To achieve the above purpose, the automatically defined terminal is proposed and is used to modify the simple genetic programming.

title: Interrelational multipliers for the US economy: an application to welfare reform abstract: More than twenty years after its publication, Ken’ichi Miyazawa’s (1976) classic monograph, Input-Output Analysis and the Structure of Income Distribution, stands as the major work in the field. Although several others have made further advances, both conceptually and empirically, one must still acknowledge that input-output income distribution analysis in general, and Miyazawa income distribution multipliers in particular, have not been used to their full potential.

title: Construction of an input-output income distribution matrix for the U.S. abstract: In this chapter, we explain the construction of a set of disaggregated personal income accounts to be incorporated into a 1987 Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) of the U.S. The accounts are disaggregated according to eleven income brackets and eighty economic sectors on the basis of the 2-digit U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis classification. Below, we discuss the economic accounting procedures, the data, and the results. The major contributions of the chapter are the methodology to map functional income payments into the size distribution of personal income and the extensive use of primary data to construct the accounts. This includes steps to construct the first such matrix that includes multiple jobholders and multiple-earner households.

Economic Growth and the Environmental Kuznets Curve in Taiwan: A Simultaneity Model Analysis

title: Economic Growth and the Environmental Kuznets Curve in Taiwan: A Simultaneity Model Analysis abstract: This paper uses panel data on Taiwan to examine the Environmental Kuznets
Curve (EKC) relationship between per capita income and air pollution. In the EKC
literature, EKC is always estimated in the form of a single equation. However, since
both income and environmental quality are endogenous variables, i.e., they impact
upon each other, the estimation of single equation relationships where simultaneity
exists will produce biased and inconsistent estimates. We specify the channels
through which Y (income) affects P (pollution) and P affects Y in a conceptual model and then formulate a two-equation simultaneous model for empirical research. We test for exogeneity with the Hausman test and estimate the simultaneity model using the
two-stage least squares method. The inverted U-shaped relationships are found between NO2/CO and per capita income in Taiwan. As income grows, there is first an increase in the levels of NO2 and CO, followed by a decrease. Air pollution, however, does not significantly affect income.
