<title>The Vietnamese-American Body in Motion: Diasporic Identity and Embodiment in Ocean Vuong's On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous</title>
      <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/128246</link>
<description>title: The Vietnamese-American Body in Motion: Diasporic Identity and Embodiment in Ocean Vuong's On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous abstract: The study analyzes how Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous connects East and West by using the body as a metaphor for diasporic dislocation, depicting the narrator Little Dog’s journey through the differing experiences of Vietnam and America, which enhances the novel’s examination of identity and existence across cultural divides. Expanding the traditional interpretations of trauma and identity, the examination stresses the existential aspects of Vuong’s work, illustrating how Little Dog’s profound relationship with his physical experience establishes the body as a crucial center of perception and selfhood. Utilizing Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology, the paper points out how Vuong’s visceral language and fragmented narrative structure surpass verbal constraints, employing embodied communication to connect the lived experience of his present life in America with the enduring, haunting memories of his family’s past in Vietnam.

<title>Toward a Future of Ethical Cohabitation: The Precariousness of Life and Ethics in Arundhati Roy's The Ministry of Utmost Happiness</title>
      <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126244</link>
<description>title: Toward a Future of Ethical Cohabitation: The Precariousness of Life and Ethics in Arundhati Roy's The Ministry of Utmost Happiness abstract: This research paper seeks to engage with Judith Butler's discourse on precarity, vulnerability, precariousness, and the ethics of cohabitation in reading the novel The Ministry of Utmost Happiness (2017), written by the contemporary Indian woman writer Arundhati Roy. In her novel, Roy presents various precarious conditions in which minority groups are rendered subject to vulnerability, including the homeless, the poor, the Muslim minority, transgender people, the lowest caste, etc.; meanwhile, a community of cohabitation is imagined on the basis of the shared precariousness in Roy's narrative. Since the September 11 attacks, Butler has been working on the idea of precarious life and the ethics of cohabitation, arguing that violence should lead to the recognition of human beings' shared precariousness and further to living together with others on the basis of ethics and
justice. This research project intends to investigate the dialogue between Butler's discourse and Roy's The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, both focusing on precarious conditions caused by gender, class, religion, and politics. By applying Butler's notions to my reading
of Roy's novel, this paper argues that in the face of precariousness, a future trajectory toward the ethics of cohabitation with otherness could be imagined.

      <title>“From a Traveller to a Dweller?: On Pico Iyer’s Writing on Japan.”</title>
      <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126181</link>
<description>title: “From a Traveller to a Dweller?: On Pico Iyer’s Writing on Japan.” abstract: The purpose of this paper is to examine ethical implications of Pico Iyer’s representations of Japan. Iyer has been highly evaluated as a travel writer with a cosmopolitan sensitivity, who offers insightful observations on the increasingly globalising world. Nevertheless, his version of cosmopolitanism, particularly the alleged neglect of his own privileged position as a global traveller, has been also questioned by some scholars on travel writing. Bearing such a controversy in mind, my paper examines Iyer’s descriptions of Japan, particularly those in his recent travel book/ memoir Autumn Light: Japan’s Season of Fire and Farewells (2019). Iyer’s earlier travel books that established his reputation, Video Night in Kathmandu: And Other Reports from the Not-So-Far East (1988) and The Global Soul: Jet Lag, Shopping Malls, and the Search for Home (2000), present Japan as a non-Western country that successfully negotiates globalisation while retaining its traditional culture. At the same time, he highlights his being based in Japan as credentials as a cosmopolitan traveller who feels at home anywhere without geo-cultural roots. Autumn Light, in contrast, thematises an aging Japanese society as well as his experience as a dweller rather than a traveller. Examining how the foregrounding of dwelling enables Iyer to characterise himself as a long-term observer of the aging society, my paper considers the extent to which Autumn Light complicates one of the central ethical issues in travel writing, namely the problem of representing the cultural Other.
