    <title>Suppression of train-induced resonance in high-speed railway truss bridges</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/128628</link>
<description>title: Suppression of train-induced resonance in high-speed railway truss bridges abstract: Train-induced dynamic resonance poses a significant challenge to the integrity and serviceability of high-speed railway bridges, with consequences including structural degradation, reduced passenger comfort, and a shortened operational lifespan. Although resonance and cancellation mechanisms are well established for simple beam configurations, mitigating resonance effects, particularly for higher-order vibrational modes in complex bridge systems, remains an unresolved issue. This paper proposes an integrated framework that combines wavenumber-based spectral envelope analysis, finite-element modeling, and train-bridge interaction simulations to address this problem. The spectral approach facilitates the direct identification of critical span lengths that amplify resonant response and optimal spans that promote its cancellation. Numerical results indicate that for simply-supported truss bridges, resonant excitation is effectively mitigated when the span length is 2.5 times the carriage length. In contrast, for continuous truss bridges, higher-mode resonances persist at these optimal spans, requiring the implementation of supplemental dynamic absorbers for effective control. This study offers a robust computational methodology to guide the design of high-speed railway truss bridges for enhanced dynamic performance and long-term durability.

<title>Investigation of Dynamic Coupling Effect on Bridge Frequency Measurement</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/128627</link>
<description>title: Investigation of Dynamic Coupling Effect on Bridge Frequency Measurement abstract: In this study, a multidisciplinary approach combining a numerical analysis in three dimensions and a laboratory test is developed to investigate the dynamic coupling effect as induced by vehicle–bridge interaction in the indirect measurement. To unveil such dynamic coupling and its influence on the frequency measurement, a single degree-of-freedom test vehicle is exclusively designed with adjustable frequency, which is a low-cost, easy-to-use, and reliable tool for measuring beam frequencies in the laboratory while providing valuable data for validating numerical models, calibrating sensors, and evaluating bridge performance. From the multidisciplinary analysis, the shifts of frequencies for both vehicle and bridge are consistently demonstrated as a result of vehicle–bridge interaction effect. Moreover, for the identification of higher-order bridge frequencies, the contact-point response works better than the vehicle’s response, even with shifted frequencies being observed in the three-dimensional numerical results. As an extension, a parametric study is conducted numerically to include various practical conditions, including different types and boundary conditions of a bridge as well as pavement irregularity.

    <title>Dispersion Analysis in Periodically Coupled Train–Bridge Systems</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/128572</link>
<description>title: Dispersion Analysis in Periodically Coupled Train–Bridge Systems abstract: This study employs the wave dispersion relation of periodic structures to demonstrate the dual resonance mechanism occurring as a train traverses a series of bridges. Dual resonance occurs when the resonant speeds of both the train and the bridge coincide, leading to resonance in the bridge and progressively amplifying the train’s responses from the front to the rear carriages. This phenomenon involves a complex interaction between the bridge’s temporal resonance and the train’s spatial periodicity. This interaction creates a unique spatiotemporal vibration pattern. To understand the wave dispersion in this periodically coupled system, we model it as two interconnected spring-mass systems connected by contact springs. The analytical approach allows us to identify the key parameters governing the wave dispersion relation and wave-transmitting phenomena between two periodic structures. The wave dispersion analysis reveals that continuous beams have broader passbands, allowing them to transmit more waves and vibrations from moving trains than simply supported beams. This reduces resonance and leads to smoother system performance for continuous beams. Consequently, when a train travels on an equal-span continuous bridge at its resonance speeds, its vibrations can be efficiently transmitted to the bridge through these passbands, thereby mitigating resonance.

<title>Characterization of dynamic coupling induced shifts of frequencies in vehicle-scanning method</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126803</link>
<description>title: Characterization of dynamic coupling induced shifts of frequencies in vehicle-scanning method abstract: A comprehensive strategy combining theory and experiment is proposed to characterize the dynamic coupling induced shifts of vehicle and bridge frequencies through both experimental investigation and numerical validation, in which the effect of vehicle-bridge interaction is theoretically incorporated in the vehicle-scanning method based on the experimental model. It is known that the measurement of bridge frequencies plays an important role in structural health monitoring as the shift of frequency can be served as an indicator of possible damage occurring in a bridge. Nevertheless, the attention has been mainly drawn on the accuracy improvement in developing the vehicle-scanning method so far, with limited discussion of dynamic coupling effect on the frequency shifts. As such, a combined theoretical–experimental approach is presented to show that the influence of vehicle-bridge interaction results in the coupled frequencies of a vehicle-beam system using the vehicle-scanning method, and adopting a heavy lumped test vehicle can lead to the underestimated bridge frequency and overestimated vehicle frequency. As a new finding, the effect of rolling frequency is experimentally observed in the vehicle spectrum for the first time.

    <title>Hybrid vehicle scanning techniques tied-arch railway bridges</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126802</link>
<description>title: Hybrid vehicle scanning techniques tied-arch railway bridges abstract: Regular monitoring of the hanger system is essential for preserving structural integrity in tied-arch bridges. This proactive monitoring enables preventive maintenance and early detection of hanger damage. To confront this issue, we propose a novel scanning method for assessing the impact of damaged hangers on the dynamic behaviour of single-span tied-arch railway bridges. Using each hanger as a positional reference, this method employs an instrumented vehicle as a mobile scanner to indirectly acquire vibration data from the traversed bridge deck. The hybrid approach integrates vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI) dynamics, vehicle scanning method (VSM), and moving windowed Fourier transform (mw-FT) technique to generate time–frequency spectrograms from the collected signals. In this representation, the time axis indicates the duration of the inspection vehicle traversing the bridge deck. By analysing frequency shifts within the spectrogram, we can identify damaged hangers through observed variations in frequency content over time. Numerical studies demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed hybrid vehicle scanning technique in detecting potential hanger damage in tied-arch railway bridges.

<title>Resonance reduction for linked train cars moving on multiple simply supported bridges</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126801</link>
<description>title: Resonance reduction for linked train cars moving on multiple simply supported bridges abstract: The dynamic interaction of a moving train over a series of railway bridges with equal spans can result in a coupled vibration problem of wave transmission between two periodic structures. Dual resonance occurs when both systems vibrate in phase and the train travels at a resonant speed. The objectives of this paper are to (1) develop an active pitching resonator (APR) to attenuate resonance waves in a train; (2) study the dispersion relation for pitching motion control of periodically linked train cars; (3) investigate the key parameters that affect the dispersion band gaps of wave attenuation in a train; (4) present an active vibration cancellation method to enhance the control performance of the APR; and (5) demonstrate the effectiveness of using the optimal APRs to reduce resonance of a moving train. Through dispersion analysis, the optimum APR can not only shift the target frequency level away from resonance of a moving train, but also create a wide resonance band gap to reduce wave transmission in the train. Finally, the effectiveness of the optimum APR unit in reducing the resonance and attenuating the waves of a train travelling over multiple-span simple beams is demonstrated by dynamic finite element analysis of the train-bridge interaction.

    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126198</link>
<description>title: Fluid Grey: A Co‐Living Design for Young and Old Based on the Fluidity of Grey Space Hierarchies to Retain Regional Spatial Characteristics abstract: Architectural design and urban renewal that adapt to an ageing society and are localized are urgent needs around the world. On the other hand, the concept of grey space, which refers to transitional space and is an in‐between concept, has been proposed since the 1980s, but few studies have further explored its hierarchy, fluidity, and relationship with regional characteristics. Therefore, this study hopes to use the fluidity of the grey space hierarchy to solve the problem of design that adapts to an ageing society and preserves regional characteristics. This study mainly focuses on the spatial characteristics of Beitou Heart Village, summarizes five grey space hierarchies and fluidity modes, and finally designs social housing for young and old cohabitation in a bottom‐up manner based on them, restoring local unique neighborhood care and multi‐ethnic communication methods. There are three innovations in this study: (1) defining the division method of the grey space hierarchy; (2) exploring the richness and scalability of the grey space hierarchy in terms of fluidity; (3) using the grey space hierarchy to achieve neighborhood care and multi‐ethnic communication, making social housing for urban renewal more people‐oriented and retaining spatial regional characteristics. This paper may provide a theoretical foundation and practical help for grey‐space‐based design and urban renewal in the future.

<title>Challenges Of ACI 318-19 Revisions To Flexural Design Of RC Beams Considering Higher-strength Reinforcements</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/125673</link>
<description>title: Challenges Of ACI 318-19 Revisions To Flexural Design Of RC Beams Considering Higher-strength Reinforcements abstract: For flexural design, the 2019 Building Code of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-19) revisions allows the use of high-strength reinforcements and concretes as well as new reinforcement strain limits for reinforced concrete (RC) structures. As a result, more economic flexural design of RC members with lower amount of longitudinal steel reinforcements or smaller sections will be appreciated. However, such benefits may probably introduce another issue of deflection analysis and depth (thickness)-span limitations in the coded serviceability requirements. From the viewpoint of mathematical programming, this topic is of constrained optimization problems with multiple decision variables and object functions. To address this issue, an Excel-spreadsheet modeling to integrate the flexural reinforcement design with the coded serviceability requirements of RC beams was developed, in which the Generalized Reduced Gradient (GRG) based nonlinear optimization method defaulted in the Excel-Solver is applied to search feasible (or optimal) longitudinal reinforcements for RC beam design. The results indicates that the serviceability requirements should be assessed in flexural design of slender RC beams if higher-strength reinforcement is taken into account.

<title>Frequency Variation and Dynamic Behavior in a Moving Mass-Plate System</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/125671</link>
<description>title: Frequency Variation and Dynamic Behavior in a Moving Mass-Plate System abstract: As the frequency variation in a moving mass-plate system is seldom discussed in the previous work, this study first formulates the semi-analytical solutions of a system consisting of a moving mass on a square plate. Based on the moving mass-plate system, several finite element models with designed plate-type bridges are established to further investigate the effect of moving mass on a plate, the influence of bridge local modes, and the influence of moving loads on a bridge. The numerical results have shown that the frequency variation of a plate-type bridge can reach 30% for the first three modes. The unique phenomenon of wave propagation is exhibited in the acceleration responses of the plate-type bridge, while it is uncommon for a beam-type bridge. For design purpose, the following are remarked: (1) The use of Rayleigh damping on the stiffened bridge can effectively suppress the influence of local modes on the bridge deck. (2) The high stiffness in the moving load can be served as the damper to reduce the dynamic responses of a vehicle. (3) In the design stage of a plate-type bridge subjected to moving loads, the moving force is the most conservative one among the three moving loads.

<title>Exploring Models of Elderly Care Through New Living Arrangements for Different Generations</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/124962</link>
<description>title: Exploring Models of Elderly Care Through New Living Arrangements for Different Generations abstract: Taiwan is set to become a super-aged society by 2025, which is defined as 20% of the population being aged 65 or older. Our findings revealed that in today's model of care, many senior people no longer live in a three-generation household, and multigenerational living has risen to 57%, in which younger adults live nearby and take care of older adults. Reasons for this include advanced architectural technology creating vertical communities where people live on different floors in the same high-rise building or older adults simply less willing to relocate as they age. Whatever the reason, current living arrangements have changed from three-generation cohabitation in which younger adults (children) care for older adults (parents) under one roof to multigenerational living. This study used a questionnaire survey to explore multigenerational living arrangements, especially because people's willingness to mutually provide care for each other could affect their choice of living arrangements. The aim of this study was to understand the relationship among living structures, elderly care, and mutual caring in order to identify an appropriate model. This study also sought to identify improvements in future environments and accordingly provide suggestions. The survey results indicated that when family members from different generations live in close quarters, they still look after each other without the need to cohabit in a three-generation home. This type of living arrangement is called "multiple generations living in close quarters" or "intergenerational community." Family members of different ages were also found to have different needs and expectations about living arrangements, and as such, they preferred to live on different floors to ensure independent living and a better living quality. Therefore, a new model of care has emerged where family members prefer to live in close proximity rather than living under the same roof. Further investigation also revealed that the distance between the homes of the younger adults and that of the older adults is key to multigenerational living arrangements. The majority of respondents agreed that a distance of 5-10 minutes on foot was deemed as living close to each other. This echoes New Urbanism, which defines "living in close quarters" as every family member living within a 400 m radius of each other to regularly support and visit their loved ones including in times of need. Its findings show that family members of different ages have different needs and expectations for living arrangements, and they prefer to live nearby rather than under the same roof. The distance between the homes of young and old is key to multigenerational living arrangements. This conclusion has an empirical contribution to housing policy, social policy and architectural design.

<title>Laboratory Vibration Studies of Metro Tracks Equipped with Tuned Rail Dampers</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/124312</link>
<description>title: Laboratory Vibration Studies of Metro Tracks Equipped with Tuned Rail Dampers abstract: Purpose
With the rapid development of urban metro systems in the growing cities of China, a way to reduce metro train-induced track vibrations transmitted through ground to surrounding buildings has attracted the attention of engineering researchers. Using additional mass, damping and flexural stiffness to improve the dynamic performance of metro tracks, a Tuned Rail Damper (TRD) is developed to mitigate the vibrations of the metro tracks.

Methods
In this paper, a laboratory hammer test is designed and carried out to assess the vibration performance of a 3-interval (of 3 × 0.6 m) metro track installed with the TRD sets.

Results
The hammer test results indicated that depending on the position of a hammer impulse acting on the 3-interval track unit, different excitation frequencies would be measured.

Conclusion
According to the experimental study, the TRD has advantages such as easy installation, convenient inspection by hammer test, and good vibration reduction performance for its flexural strengthening effect on metro tracks. Moreover, the composed TRD-track system has a robust ability to reduce vibrations and an increase of higher frequencies compared to conventional tracks. This dynamic feature can decrease the risk of clip failure in a fastening system subjected to intensive excitations from moving metro trains.

<title>Shifted Resonance of Railway Bridges Under Trains Passing by Each Other</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/124251</link>
<description>title: Shifted Resonance of Railway Bridges Under Trains Passing by Each Other abstract: Dynamic vehicle–bridge interaction (VBI) plays a crucial role in the train-induced vibrations of a railway bridge for its coupling effects may reduce the bridge response and down-shift the resonant speed. The commonly used nominal theoretical resonant speed (=fbD)
of a typical railway bridge, however, is only related to the bridge frequency (fb)
 and car length (D)
, but it neglects the VBI effects of the moving trains. Such a shifted resonance phenomenon would become significant for a bridge under two trains passing by each other. This study develops a method using an equivalent modal mass to be added onto the bridge to account for the frequency shift due to the presence of multiple train cars for estimation of the shifted resonant speed. The numerical study demonstrates that the proposed method can predict the shifted resonant speed and explain the shifted-resonance phenomenon of railway bridges under train passages.

    <title>Double Sub-Resonance Mechanism in Torsional–Flexural Vibrations of a Double-Track Short Bridge Under a Moving Train</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/124250</link>
<description>title: Double Sub-Resonance Mechanism in Torsional–Flexural Vibrations of a Double-Track Short Bridge Under a Moving Train abstract: Train-induced resonance of a railway bridge occurs when the train speed coincides with the primary resonance speed (vbr
) of the bridge, from which we can determine the sub-resonance speed as (vbr∕n|n=2,3
). The primary resonance speed of a short bridge is generally much higher than the operation speeds of current high-speed trains but the corresponding sub-resonance speeds probably lie in the operation speed range. Such a resonance scenario can be observed from the vibration of a double-track bridge subjected to an eccentrically moving train, in which the deck vibration is combined by the vertical-flexural and torsional vibration modes of the bridge. Once the two modal sub-resonance speeds coincide with each other, a double sub-resonance will be developed on the bridge. In this study, an iteration-based train–bridge interaction finite element procedure will be presented to demonstrate the double resonance phenomenon. As expected, the double resonance may bring about a dramatic amplification on deck vibration. Such an excessive vibration is harmful to ballast stability and track maintenance of railway bridges.

<title>Investigating the malleable socioeconomic resilience pathway to urban cohesion: a case of Taipei metropolitan area</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/124204</link>
<description>title: Investigating the malleable socioeconomic resilience pathway to urban cohesion: a case of Taipei metropolitan area abstract: It is known that globalization has led first- and second-tier cities’ urban restructuring trajectories, excreted pressures, and caused tremendous socioeconomic volatility. This resulted in marginalized communities in dire of social empowerment, employment structure variance, and industry sectoral adjustment. Moreover, recent successive climate and health crisis unfolded and affirmed the state of our urban incompetence to sustain socioeconomic resilience or otherwise; lacking swift responses in providing critical management and services, cites are facing multifaceted challenges. Urban well-being and resilience are at stake. Although the environmental and health dimensional effects are apparent, this study ascertains that the transept multi-scalar analysis within the urban socioeconomic structure is crucial in sustaining core resilience to foster health and well-being of the community. As an integral part of the investigation, the revised DPSIR assessment framework is applied to evaluate the sectoral shift; spatial structure disarray and urban codependence degree are examined within the Taipei metropolitan area (TMA), a medium size but densely populated metropolitan area in Taiwan. The place-based DPSIR analysis ascertained the states and impacts in TMA: (1) A population decline speeded the restructuring of the urban core, while the impact of demographic aging and shrinkage rate mandates proper management and planning responses to the decline process; (2) the socioeconomic state effect is determined but does not critically affect the periphery zone, while an uneven demographic shift within the urban core necessitates dynamic adjustment responses to appropriately provide intergenerational services; (3) the uneven sector redistribution stimulated the core’s spatial and structural inter-dependency with peripheral zones, requiring governance with tighter cross-administration cooperation among respective public sectors; and (4) facing the sector/temporal and demographic pressure, urban cohesiveness in the TMA is greatly affected, which in turn disrupts the resilience pathway toward a cohesion. The study ascertained that the revised DPSIR framework could provide cities facing pressing socioeconomic drivers with effective analysis to allocate pressures, states, and impacts and formulate the necessary responses. To assure the socioeconomic resilience and urban cohesiveness, planning policy should carefully monitor and evaluate socio-demographic and sector redistribution factors to promote the urban resilience.

<description>title: Rethinking Greening The Building Façade Under Extreme Climate: Attributes Consideration for Typo-Morphological Green Envelope Retrofit abstract: Overpopulated cities have practiced trading available land for the necessary livelihood resources, depleting accessible green assets in the densely developed urban habitat. Facing climate change as a risk multiplier, cities must reckon for alternative mitigation strategies. This study ascertains that green has proven to increase one's psychological well-being, it is also one of the most important factors to intercede the effects of air pollution and temperature. For communities necessitating viable green resources, the addition of vertical greening retrofit on building façade can satisfy the need as an intermediary media to engage meaningful interaction with the urban green-scape. Thus, proper urban planning must re-think how to incorporate these measures for public health consideration. The assessment of these criteria is important to accomplish the planning of vertical green to enhance the residents’ well-being state. A central focus is placed on the benefits to health and wellbeing and the increase in physical activity and social interaction at the neighborhood scale.

This article presents the systemic analysis to vertical green-scape attainment in central Taipei, allowing the locality and place to be incorporated into the exploration framework. The case studies presented in this paper focuses on analytical exploration of vertical green-scape attainment framework with the sub-tropic Taipei in mind. The attributes assessment framework is established; the research concludes that: (1) in line with human-nature connection and raising its priority level within both design research and design practice should consider the environmental, social, economic and spatial criteria for the design thinking exploration; (2) the analysis confirmed that desired green-scape could be attained either indoor or outdoor, with tissue, support, and infill attributes as a probable solution suited for the locality; (3) integration with urban context is highly capable in encouraging the social well-being for the urban system.
