    <title>Suppression of train-induced resonance in high-speed railway truss bridges</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/128628</link>
<description>title: Suppression of train-induced resonance in high-speed railway truss bridges abstract: Train-induced dynamic resonance poses a significant challenge to the integrity and serviceability of high-speed railway bridges, with consequences including structural degradation, reduced passenger comfort, and a shortened operational lifespan. Although resonance and cancellation mechanisms are well established for simple beam configurations, mitigating resonance effects, particularly for higher-order vibrational modes in complex bridge systems, remains an unresolved issue. This paper proposes an integrated framework that combines wavenumber-based spectral envelope analysis, finite-element modeling, and train-bridge interaction simulations to address this problem. The spectral approach facilitates the direct identification of critical span lengths that amplify resonant response and optimal spans that promote its cancellation. Numerical results indicate that for simply-supported truss bridges, resonant excitation is effectively mitigated when the span length is 2.5 times the carriage length. In contrast, for continuous truss bridges, higher-mode resonances persist at these optimal spans, requiring the implementation of supplemental dynamic absorbers for effective control. This study offers a robust computational methodology to guide the design of high-speed railway truss bridges for enhanced dynamic performance and long-term durability.

<title>Investigation of Dynamic Coupling Effect on Bridge Frequency Measurement</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/128627</link>
<description>title: Investigation of Dynamic Coupling Effect on Bridge Frequency Measurement abstract: In this study, a multidisciplinary approach combining a numerical analysis in three dimensions and a laboratory test is developed to investigate the dynamic coupling effect as induced by vehicle–bridge interaction in the indirect measurement. To unveil such dynamic coupling and its influence on the frequency measurement, a single degree-of-freedom test vehicle is exclusively designed with adjustable frequency, which is a low-cost, easy-to-use, and reliable tool for measuring beam frequencies in the laboratory while providing valuable data for validating numerical models, calibrating sensors, and evaluating bridge performance. From the multidisciplinary analysis, the shifts of frequencies for both vehicle and bridge are consistently demonstrated as a result of vehicle–bridge interaction effect. Moreover, for the identification of higher-order bridge frequencies, the contact-point response works better than the vehicle’s response, even with shifted frequencies being observed in the three-dimensional numerical results. As an extension, a parametric study is conducted numerically to include various practical conditions, including different types and boundary conditions of a bridge as well as pavement irregularity.

    <title>Dispersion Analysis in Periodically Coupled Train–Bridge Systems</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/128572</link>
<description>title: Dispersion Analysis in Periodically Coupled Train–Bridge Systems abstract: This study employs the wave dispersion relation of periodic structures to demonstrate the dual resonance mechanism occurring as a train traverses a series of bridges. Dual resonance occurs when the resonant speeds of both the train and the bridge coincide, leading to resonance in the bridge and progressively amplifying the train’s responses from the front to the rear carriages. This phenomenon involves a complex interaction between the bridge’s temporal resonance and the train’s spatial periodicity. This interaction creates a unique spatiotemporal vibration pattern. To understand the wave dispersion in this periodically coupled system, we model it as two interconnected spring-mass systems connected by contact springs. The analytical approach allows us to identify the key parameters governing the wave dispersion relation and wave-transmitting phenomena between two periodic structures. The wave dispersion analysis reveals that continuous beams have broader passbands, allowing them to transmit more waves and vibrations from moving trains than simply supported beams. This reduces resonance and leads to smoother system performance for continuous beams. Consequently, when a train travels on an equal-span continuous bridge at its resonance speeds, its vibrations can be efficiently transmitted to the bridge through these passbands, thereby mitigating resonance.

    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126803</link>
<description>title: Characterization of dynamic coupling induced shifts of frequencies in vehicle-scanning method abstract: A comprehensive strategy combining theory and experiment is proposed to characterize the dynamic coupling induced shifts of vehicle and bridge frequencies through both experimental investigation and numerical validation, in which the effect of vehicle-bridge interaction is theoretically incorporated in the vehicle-scanning method based on the experimental model. It is known that the measurement of bridge frequencies plays an important role in structural health monitoring as the shift of frequency can be served as an indicator of possible damage occurring in a bridge. Nevertheless, the attention has been mainly drawn on the accuracy improvement in developing the vehicle-scanning method so far, with limited discussion of dynamic coupling effect on the frequency shifts. As such, a combined theoretical–experimental approach is presented to show that the influence of vehicle-bridge interaction results in the coupled frequencies of a vehicle-beam system using the vehicle-scanning method, and adopting a heavy lumped test vehicle can lead to the underestimated bridge frequency and overestimated vehicle frequency. As a new finding, the effect of rolling frequency is experimentally observed in the vehicle spectrum for the first time.

    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126802</link>
<description>title: Hybrid vehicle scanning techniques tied-arch railway bridges abstract: Regular monitoring of the hanger system is essential for preserving structural integrity in tied-arch bridges. This proactive monitoring enables preventive maintenance and early detection of hanger damage. To confront this issue, we propose a novel scanning method for assessing the impact of damaged hangers on the dynamic behaviour of single-span tied-arch railway bridges. Using each hanger as a positional reference, this method employs an instrumented vehicle as a mobile scanner to indirectly acquire vibration data from the traversed bridge deck. The hybrid approach integrates vehicle-bridge interaction (VBI) dynamics, vehicle scanning method (VSM), and moving windowed Fourier transform (mw-FT) technique to generate time–frequency spectrograms from the collected signals. In this representation, the time axis indicates the duration of the inspection vehicle traversing the bridge deck. By analysing frequency shifts within the spectrogram, we can identify damaged hangers through observed variations in frequency content over time. Numerical studies demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed hybrid vehicle scanning technique in detecting potential hanger damage in tied-arch railway bridges.

<title>Resonance reduction for linked train cars moving on multiple simply supported bridges</title>
    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126801</link>
<description>title: Resonance reduction for linked train cars moving on multiple simply supported bridges abstract: The dynamic interaction of a moving train over a series of railway bridges with equal spans can result in a coupled vibration problem of wave transmission between two periodic structures. Dual resonance occurs when both systems vibrate in phase and the train travels at a resonant speed. The objectives of this paper are to (1) develop an active pitching resonator (APR) to attenuate resonance waves in a train; (2) study the dispersion relation for pitching motion control of periodically linked train cars; (3) investigate the key parameters that affect the dispersion band gaps of wave attenuation in a train; (4) present an active vibration cancellation method to enhance the control performance of the APR; and (5) demonstrate the effectiveness of using the optimal APRs to reduce resonance of a moving train. Through dispersion analysis, the optimum APR can not only shift the target frequency level away from resonance of a moving train, but also create a wide resonance band gap to reduce wave transmission in the train. Finally, the effectiveness of the optimum APR unit in reducing the resonance and attenuating the waves of a train travelling over multiple-span simple beams is demonstrated by dynamic finite element analysis of the train-bridge interaction.

    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126628</link>
<description>title: EMO-Space: A Computational Model for Interaction between Emotions and Space abstract: Architectural space can trigger emotion (Zumthor, 2006). Psychologists Mehrabian and Russell (1974) proposed PAD model, presenting eight emotions as a means for psychologists to self-assess the emotional conditions of human experience and to provide people with a way to conceptualize the impact of cognitive structure. The Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) combines with computer operations to decode and calculate different brain waves generated by human emotions, supporting the convenience and wisdom of human life. The integration of the PDA model and BCI technology will offer an understanding of the interactive relationships between space and emotion. The purpose of this research is to construct a computational model called EMO-Space, which can autonomously support space interaction through the understanding of human emotions. Based on the PAD model, the integration of BCI, the mechanism of emotional transformation, and the control of message transmission are explored. Subsequently, the computational model is proposed and simulated. EMO-Space will provide the basis for the intelligence of emotional space in the future, such as in elderly care and spatial healing.

    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/126198</link>
<description>title: Fluid Grey: A Co‐Living Design for Young and Old Based on the Fluidity of Grey Space Hierarchies to Retain Regional Spatial Characteristics abstract: Architectural design and urban renewal that adapt to an ageing society and are localized are urgent needs around the world. On the other hand, the concept of grey space, which refers to transitional space and is an in‐between concept, has been proposed since the 1980s, but few studies have further explored its hierarchy, fluidity, and relationship with regional characteristics. Therefore, this study hopes to use the fluidity of the grey space hierarchy to solve the problem of design that adapts to an ageing society and preserves regional characteristics. This study mainly focuses on the spatial characteristics of Beitou Heart Village, summarizes five grey space hierarchies and fluidity modes, and finally designs social housing for young and old cohabitation in a bottom‐up manner based on them, restoring local unique neighborhood care and multi‐ethnic communication methods. There are three innovations in this study: (1) defining the division method of the grey space hierarchy; (2) exploring the richness and scalability of the grey space hierarchy in terms of fluidity; (3) using the grey space hierarchy to achieve neighborhood care and multi‐ethnic communication, making social housing for urban renewal more people‐oriented and retaining spatial regional characteristics. This paper may provide a theoretical foundation and practical help for grey‐space‐based design and urban renewal in the future.

<description>title: Challenges Of ACI 318-19 Revisions To Flexural Design Of RC Beams Considering Higher-strength Reinforcements abstract: For flexural design, the 2019 Building Code of the American Concrete Institute (ACI 318-19) revisions allows the use of high-strength reinforcements and concretes as well as new reinforcement strain limits for reinforced concrete (RC) structures. As a result, more economic flexural design of RC members with lower amount of longitudinal steel reinforcements or smaller sections will be appreciated. However, such benefits may probably introduce another issue of deflection analysis and depth (thickness)-span limitations in the coded serviceability requirements. From the viewpoint of mathematical programming, this topic is of constrained optimization problems with multiple decision variables and object functions. To address this issue, an Excel-spreadsheet modeling to integrate the flexural reinforcement design with the coded serviceability requirements of RC beams was developed, in which the Generalized Reduced Gradient (GRG) based nonlinear optimization method defaulted in the Excel-Solver is applied to search feasible (or optimal) longitudinal reinforcements for RC beam design. The results indicates that the serviceability requirements should be assessed in flexural design of slender RC beams if higher-strength reinforcement is taken into account.

    <link>https://tkuir.lib.tku.edu.tw/dspace/handle/987654321/125671</link>
<description>title: Frequency Variation and Dynamic Behavior in a Moving Mass-Plate System abstract: As the frequency variation in a moving mass-plate system is seldom discussed in the previous work, this study first formulates the semi-analytical solutions of a system consisting of a moving mass on a square plate. Based on the moving mass-plate system, several finite element models with designed plate-type bridges are established to further investigate the effect of moving mass on a plate, the influence of bridge local modes, and the influence of moving loads on a bridge. The numerical results have shown that the frequency variation of a plate-type bridge can reach 30% for the first three modes. The unique phenomenon of wave propagation is exhibited in the acceleration responses of the plate-type bridge, while it is uncommon for a beam-type bridge. For design purpose, the following are remarked: (1) The use of Rayleigh damping on the stiffened bridge can effectively suppress the influence of local modes on the bridge deck. (2) The high stiffness in the moving load can be served as the damper to reduce the dynamic responses of a vehicle. (3) In the design stage of a plate-type bridge subjected to moving loads, the moving force is the most conservative one among the three moving loads.
