Taiwanese Cruise Tourist Behavior during Different Phases of Experience

title: Taiwanese Cruise Tourist Behavior during Different Phases of Experience abstract: This study examined the influences on the decisions and experiences of Taiwanese cruise tourists during different phases of leisure experience. The study results demonstrated that trip price and duration were the two main influences on tourist decisions during the anticipation phase of planning their trip. During the on-site experience phase, the determinants of tourist reasons for using different services during their cruise varied. Notably, price only slightly influenced total tourist satisfaction and re-purchase intention during the recollection phase, whereas service quality exerted a major influence.

title: Research note: Resort hotel location abstract: This paper presems a novel decision framework for optimizing resort hotel location selection via modified Delphi modelling. A panel of 24 experts with various backgrounds, including academia, government and business, provided input on location factor selection. During three discussions, panel members agreed to a set of 34 factors requiring consideration in selecting the location for a resort hotel. The application of the proposed model and future research directions are also addressed.

Measuring Location Selection Factors for International Resort Parks

title: Measuring Location Selection Factors for International Resort Parks abstract: This study presents a framework of issues to analyze Porter’s (The Competitive Advantage of Nations, 1990) Diamond model, and develops factors for determining the optimality of an international resort park location using the modified Delphi model. A panel of 16 experts from various backgrounds, including academia, government and business, provided input for the selection of location factors. Following three discussions, panel members reached consensus and selected the following set of 26 factors for optimizing location selection for international resort parks. This study also provides direction for applying the proposed model and suggestions for future research.

Local Economic Linkages to Community-based Tourism in Rural Costa Rica

title: Local Economic Linkages to Community-based Tourism in Rural Costa Rica abstract: This paper reports on the contribution of tourism to the wellbeing of rural residents through the development of economic linkages engaged by community-based tourism (CBT) in rural Costa Rica. In a qualitative case study of local economic linkages surrounding one such project in Chira Island, economic linkages were assessed at two levels: discourse and practice. The findings indicate that CBT does not involve the collective property of the community, but rather, the collective property of a group of community members organized in a formal association. As a result, a discourse on local economic linkages has been promoted by CBT support organizations in which hopes of wider benefits are placed on small linkages to services and products provided by local community members. However, a field survey suggested that the economic linkages generated by CBT in the community were sporadic and polyvalent and, furthermore, that the linkages with agriculture are negatively affected by scale and seasonality, resulting in leakages out of the community. These findings caution practitioners that CBT may only have small-scale positive impacts on the local economy.

title: Discourses of Pro-environmental behavior: Experiences of graduate students in conservation-related disciplines abstract: It can be argued that the environmental behaviors of conservation and natural resources professionals' may well serve as exemplars for the general public to emulate. Understanding the experiences and influences that shape the behaviors of individuals with contextual and empirical knowledge about desirable and beneficial conservation practices can help education managers when designing programs that target pro-environmental behaviors. This grounded theory study examined the discourses that shape pro-environmental behaviors among six graduate students pursuing degrees in conservation-related fields. Together, biophysical context, higher education, and personal costs were the main influences shaping the discourses that participants used to describe their pro-environmental behaviors.

title: Developing An Estimation Model for Resort Type Selection abstract: This study attempted to optimize resort hotel location type in Taiwan by using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Questionnaires were completed by 17 experts directly involved in tourism development projects. Analytical results indicated that while industry professionals, government authorities and resort investors considered all five dimensions of Porter's Diamond Model (that is factor endowments; demand conditions; firm strategy, structure and rivalry; related and supporting industries and government) important, each group ranked their relative importance differently. Finally, a recommended solution was presented and analyzed based on the business strategic plan.

Determining the Location of Resort Parks Using a Standardized Model

title: Determining the Location of Resort Parks Using a Standardized Model abstract: This study describes current research on risk evaluation, and draws links with the location selection process. This study constructs standards for assessing location selection based on competitive advantage and risk perspective. Data is collected via modified Delphi approach interviews, then analyzed via content analysis and Analytical Hierarchy Process. Based on the analytical results, the evaluation standards are divided into risk evaluation and the four main dimensions: factor conditions; demand conditions; firm strategy structure and rivalry, and related and supporting industries. This study also develops three evaluation standards for resort park location. Measuring location selections can help businesses select suitable international resort parks, to provide some evaluation standards which can provide basis for tourism departments and assist industries in location selection.
