Narrating a Nation into Being: On Michael Ondaatje's Deviant Narrative Strategy in Running in the Family

title: Narrating a Nation into Being: On Michael Ondaatje's Deviant Narrative Strategy in Running in the Family abstract: Michael Ondaatje's Running in the Family (1982) is often regarded as a fictionalized memoir or auto/biographical fiction that transcends generic conventions. The narrative voice in the book engages the reader by weaving together diverse stories related to Ondaatje's family history in Ceylon/Sri Lanka. The book records the life ("bios") of his people as much as it is invested in his gesture of fragmentary writing ("graphy"). As argued in the article, this latter effort by Ondaatje, embodied in his employment of episodic and sometimes incomplete narrative to reproduce the transient and meandering nature of recollection on both parts of himself and the others, questions the imperative of foregrounding manifest historical accounts in an immigrant writer's text, such as the British divide-and-rule policy in colonial Ceylon and the 1971 insurrection in postcolonial Sri Lanka. Ondaatje calls for a collective self-storytelling that coordinates the seemingly bifurcated personal and political aspects in such a way that the convergence of scandals, gossips, familial archives, and oneiric accounts enacts a dialogic performance. Ondaatje is both conscious of the unreachability of the truth from the outset and is conscientious about presenting the book as expressive of the Burgher people's communal achievement, which counterbalances the nationalist narrative of history dominated by the Sinhalese and the Tamil. Drawing on Homi Bhabha's discussion of nation and narration, this article suggests reading the memoir as inscribing an aesthetic creation of the narrative process on the histories of the multi-ethnic people in the writer's imaginary homeland.

I first argue that Rachel's economic migration from Mozambique to South Africa is driven by a poverty-stricken life, leading her to enter the "global care chains" (Hochschild, "Global Care Chains" 130). Her anguish at being undervalued is not solely directed at her employers, the Jordaans, but also extends to the hierarchical structure within the domestic employment sector, and further reflects the broader issues of unequal development within the global economy. Second, drawing upon Arlie Russel Hochschild's concept of "the economy of gratitude," I argue that when the Jordaans convey their generosity to Rachel through multiple gifts, they anticipate an equivalent amount of emotional commitment in return. However, Rachel's detachment demonstrates that in this employment sector, genuine emotional bonds between employers and their employees will never form as long as class, racial, and economic disparities continue to overshadow the employment relationship.

title: 圍繞「日本人優先」的敘事分析：來自居住於日本的日台夫妻之訪談 abstract: 本発表では、日本在住の日本人夫と台湾人妻の夫婦が、社会の「日本人ファースト」の声の高まりをいかに捉えているのかを明らかにする。データは、2025年 12 月から 2026 年 2 月にかけて、5 組の日台夫婦を対象に、子育て経験について夫妻別々に行った半構造化インタビューである。分析の焦点は、4 人の夫と 5人の妻に対して質問した「昨今の日本人ファーストや外国人排斥の空気の高まりについてどう思うか」に対する回答部分である。分析では、夫妻それぞれの返答を外観し、さらに夫の語りをナラティブ分析と会話分析の「成員カテゴリー化装置」（Sacks, 1972）の概念を援用して分析する。 5 人の妻のうち、「日本人ファーストにより個人的に影響を受けている」と答えたのは 1 人のみで、他 4 人は個人的な影響はないと答えたが、そのうち 1 人は将来の子供への影響を心配していた。一方、4 人の夫のうち 3 人は質問自体をまず否定し、「外国人」を「違法・不法外国人」と訂正した上で、SNS 等で流布されている「外国人犯罪」について説明する語りを展開した。また、残り 1 人の夫は外国人排斥の高まりに懸念を示したが、その理由は妻への影響というよりも、自身が多くの外国人と働く立場にあり、日本社会での外国籍労働者の重要性を認識しているためであった。以上の分析から、日本人夫には「日本人ファースト」や「外国人排斥」の対象に自分の妻は含まれていないと考える傾向があることが明らかになった。

日台家庭の家庭言語政策の現状と課題ー在日台湾人母へのアンケート調査からー

title: 日台家庭の家庭言語政策の現状と課題ー在日台湾人母へのアンケート調査からー abstract: 本研究は、日本在住の日台国際結婚家庭の家庭言語政策に関するアンケート調査の報告である。筆者はこれまで1990年代から2000年代に日本で子育てをした台湾人母の語りを検証し、当時の日本で子供に中国語を継承することの困難や葛藤、親の教育戦略などを解明してきた（中村 2024, 2025）。それらの語りからは、当時の日本社会の外国人に対する不寛容が浮き彫りになった。それでは約30年後の現在日本で子育てする台湾人母は家庭でどのような言語教育をしているのだろうか。　研究対象は、学齢期の子供を持つ台湾人母114名で、Google formでアンケートを行った。その結果、最多の家庭言語政策は「一親一言語の原則」（約54%）である一方、次に多いのは日本語メインで時々中国語を混用する実践（約22%）で、中国語がメインの家庭は約6%に過ぎなかった。また、多くの家庭で日常的に子供が中国語に触れる機会を作っていることも明らかになった。これらの結果は、先行研究と比較すると中国語の継承環境が改善されているように見受けられるが、自由記述には中国語を継承させることへの困難や日本の子育て環境への不満も少なくなかった。そのため、今後は質的手法で個人の経験を掘り下げる必要性が示唆された。

The main stages in the development of visual studies are analyzed, the differences between visual culture and screen culture are elucidated, and the typological characteristics of screen culture, as well as its influence on the transformation of communicative practices, cognitive models, and forms of social interaction in the context of the digitalization of culture, are identified.

title: 日本のフリースクールと台湾の実験教育 abstract: 台湾では、不登校対策ともう一つの教育の選択肢としての「実験教育」が注目されている。本書では、日本と台湾における不登校問題と、それに対応するフリースクールやオルタナティブスクールの現状を比較しながら、両国の教育制度改革の動向を分析する。台湾のオルタナティブスクールの実験教育による法制度化の過程から、日本のフリースクールの法制度化に示唆を与える点を探る。制度化の過程、課題、そして今後の展望を明らかにすることで、学校教育の多様化に向けた新たな視座を提示。フリースクールとオルタナティブスクールを含む、すべてのオルタナティブな教育の一助となる1冊。

title: 外国人母の「日本に関する愚痴」をめぐる会話分析ー日本人調査者によるインタビューでのアイデンティティ交渉ー abstract: 本研究では、会話分析を用いて在日外国人が日本人に対して「日本に関する愚痴」を話すことを求められた際の相互行為の展開を検証する。さらに、そのやりとりを通して交渉される参与者のアイデンティティをポジショニング理論（Bamberg 1997）を援用して考察する。本研究が扱うデータは、日本人調査者（筆者）が日本で子育てをした台湾人母を対象に実施したライフストーリー・インタビューの会話である。　分析では、調査者が「周囲に子育てや生活について相談したり愚痴を言い合ったりする台湾人がいたか」という趣旨の質問をして以降、実際に台湾人母たちが抱いていた具体的な不満の内容を聞き出すまでの相互行為の過程に焦点を当てる。3人の台湾人母のインタビュー会話を検証した結果、3者それぞれに異なる会話展開およびポジショニングの実践が確認された。　1人目のケースでは、台湾人母は自発的に不満の内容に言及した。しかし、「愚痴を言ってもしょうがないので」、「日本はけっきょくこういう感じです」と前置きすることで、続く不満の内容を「愚痴」ではなく「日台の教育文化の違い」に転換して提示していた。そのような発話構築を通して、「日台の相違を受容している私」というポジショニングが実践されていることが明らかになった。　2人目と3人目のケースでは、「台湾人同士で愚痴を話すこと」については肯定したにも関わらず、具体的な不満の内容は先延ばしにする実践が見られた。2人目の場合は、自分は愚痴を言わない理由を述べることで、話題が不満の内容から逸れる展開になった。調査者が不満の内容を追求すると、台湾人母は「自分はその輪に入らない」と断言してから、最終的に不満の内容に言及した。この発話の組み立てを通して、愚痴を言う他の台湾人と自身を対比させ「好きで日本にいる私」「日本文化をよく理解している私」というポジショニングが実践されていた。　一方、3人目の台湾人母は愚痴の内容を求める調査者の質問に対し、笑いや沈黙などで応答を遅延させた後、「日本人の不思議なところ」という抽象的な返答を産出した。それに対し、調査者は共感を示すことで「台湾で子育てをしている日本人母」というポジショニングを実践し、調査者自らが台湾生活に抱く愚痴を開示した。その発話を契機に談話アイデンティティ(Zimmerman 1998)の交代が生じ、調査者が台湾でのカルチャーショックや愚痴について語るという展開に発展した。この調査者の語りを受けて、台湾人母は「在台日本人の抱く不満の対極が在日台湾人の抱く不満である」という形式で愚痴を開示した。この一連のやりとりでは、調査者と台湾人母が「互いの国で子育てする者」や「日本と台湾の双方をよく知る者」として相互に対比させつつ連携するという複雑なポジショニング実践が観察された。　上記3例の会話展開は三者三様だが、共通して見出されるのは、3者とも何らかの方略を用いて調査者が志向する「日本に不満を抱く台湾人」というアイデンティティに抵抗する実践である。この抵抗は、外国人の立場で相手の国についての不満を述べるという社会行為のデリケートさを改めて示唆する。本研究の知見は、被調査者と文化的背景や社会的立場を異にする調査者によるインタビューにおいて、語りの内容のみならず、その参与者間だからこそ展開した「いま・ここ」の相互行為の微細な分析を通じて、精緻なアイデンティティの交渉過程を描き出すことの重要性を改めて確認するものである。

title: Gemeinschaftsbildung unter den Deutschen in der „Musterkolonie Kiautschou“ und deren Auswirkungen auf die lokale Kultur abstract: The paper analyzes the emergence and development of the German community in the Kiautschou colony (1898–1914) and its lasting impact on the region. At the center of the talk is the question of how the Germans built an independent community by establishing modern infrastructure, constructing administrative buildings and residential quarters in the German style, and founding schools, churches, and cultural associations. In this way, they created a “little Germany,” which—at least in German self-representation—was presented as a showcase model of German efficiency and organization. In the years leading up to the outbreak of the First World War, Kiautschou developed into the most important center of German culture and way of life in East Asia. Another focus of the presentation is the tension between the German community and the local Chinese population. German colonial rule brought profound changes, such as land expropriations, the introduction of new social hierarchies, and the establishment of German administrative structures. At the same time, economic and cultural interfaces emerged, particularly through the employment of Chinese workers and staff in German projects and administration. This resulted both in cultural exchange and in tensions and resistance. The presentation sheds light on how these interactions affected local society. Finally, the talk concludes with a look at the long-term legacy of the German colonial period and how its traces remain visible up to the present day.

title: Inteligencia artificial y enseñanza de E/LE: posibilidades del programa ChatGPT para la práctica de la expresión e interacción escritas abstract: El volumen temático "Interacción, discurso y tecnología en la enseñanza del español" es una compilación multidisciplinaria que aborda los desafíos y avances en la enseñanza del español como lengua extranjera, segunda lengua y lengua de herencia. Se organiza en tres ejes principales: la interacción en el aprendizaje, el discurso en la enseñanza y la integración de la tecnología. La interacción en el aprendizaje del español se destaca como fundamental para la adquisición lingüística. Se examinan competencias interaccionales, géneros dialogados y dinámicas de grupo innovadoras que fomentan una interacción efectiva, así como el papel del feedback interactivo y la evaluación en el desarrollo de la autonomía del estudiante. En cuanto al discurso en la enseñanza, se enfoca en aspectos léxicos, gramaticales y pragmáticos esenciales para el aprendizaje. Se analiza el impacto del discurso del docente en la formación del profesorado y la importancia de estudios críticos del discurso en los materiales didácticos. También se abordan el discurso oral y escrito, la multimodalidad y la diversidad lingüística. La tecnología y mediación tecnológica se presentan como elementos transformadores en la enseñanza del español. Se exploran plataformas de aprendizaje, entornos híbridos y virtuales, y herramientas lingüísticas digitales, incluyendo la inteligencia artificial para desarrollar destrezas lingüísticas. Se trata, por tanto, de una obra de referencia indispensable para educadores, investigadores y profesionales en la enseñanza del español en diversos contextos y niveles.

AI時代的文學課程創新與實踐：以生成式AI輔助SDGs問題導向文學課程之學習成效探究

title: AI時代的文學課程創新與實踐：以生成式AI輔助SDGs問題導向文學課程之學習成效探究 abstract: 本研究旨在系統性探討「生成式AI輔助問題導向學習」(GAI+PBL)模式於永續發展目標(SDGs)文學課程中的教學成效。申請人自111學年度起，已將SDGs文學課程轉型為「探究實作型」課程，並系統性導入PBL教學法，藉由問題情境引導學生以跨領域思維分析文本、連結全球議題。前期研究結果顯示，該課程能有效提升學生在全球議題上的知識理解、態度轉化與行動實踐力。然而，亦觀察到低成就學生因日語能力不足與團隊互動壓力，導致學習動機及參與度下降，進而影響專題成果品質與課程整體表現。此現象反映出，隨著學生語文能力差異的擴大，傳統PBL教學模式已難以充分回應異質化學習者的需求，教學策略亟需創新機制予以補充。有鑑於此，申請人於114學年度提出「生成式AI輔助問題導向學習」(GAI+PBL)教學模式，嘗試將AI工具整合進課程設計，作為學習夥伴與語言支援系統，以提供個別化回饋與低壓力的參與機會，協助學生在探究過程中持續維持學習動機與語言信心。研究採混合式研究設計，透過質性資料（課堂觀察、學生反思、學習成果分析）與量化工具（學習歷程問卷、學習成效前後測）進行多層面驗證，探討GAI+PBL模式對不同能力學生的學習歷程與成果表現之影響。研究成果將進一步探討此模式在異質化學習場域中的教學可行性與實施效益，期能為AI時代的文學教育提供具創新性的教學實踐模式。

title: Jodorowsky, L'Incal et Dune: l'androgyne sacré et la malédiction ancestrale abstract: Alejandro Jodorowsky’s adaptation of the novel Dune by Frank Herbert never bore cinematic fruit, but it did lead to the inception of the saga The Incal in the 1980s. The creation of this graphic novel world — The Incal is also the title of the first volume in the series — fleshes out some elements already present in the science fiction novel. This article explores how Jodorowsky develops these aspects by exploring two themes, that of the androgynous god, whether manufactured or revealed, and that of the memory curse. This latter theme intersects with the Chilean-French writer’s work as the inventor of psychomagic, a form of therapy seeking to heal inherited trauma. The theme features prominently in another of his graphic novel series, The Metabarons. We will also examine how Jodorowsky took advantage of the possibilities offered by the graphic novel to illustrate our chosen themes by literalizing certain metaphors.
