This paper investigates how 20 self-identified Asian American teachers in Taiwan teaching English in local schools wrestle with the positionality of their racialized selves and idealized “nativeness.” Using an informal interview approach, a grounded theory framework, and narrative analysis, we investigated how participants made sense of their Asian American-ness in the ELT profession in Taiwan. Findings include complex feelings involving the image of Asian Americans, strategic language use to construct Asian-American-in-Taiwan identities, and unique interpretations of teaching U.S. culture. We discuss the emotional labor and strategic discourses these teachers undertook to convert their cultural and linguistic capital and offer suggestions for professional and curriculum development.

Instances of recycling repair were extracted from comparative speech corpora of naturally occurring, face-to-face Mandarin and French interaction. By the interactional prosody approach plus impressionistic judgments, each repair was annotated for its prosodic realization, including relative pitch height, duration, silent pauses and other sound cues for initiating the repair. Through comparing results of acoustic measurements, the discussion focuses on the similarities and differences in the sound realization while initiating and accomplishing recycling repair in both languages. It is suggested that interlocutors of the two languages may orient to rather different methods of initiating the repair in that French speakers tend to incorporate lengthening at the repair initiating sites plus optional filled pauses, while Mandarin speakers employ quick cut-offs for repair initiation, followed by immediate repair.

    <description>title: Starting from the Family: Gender Relations and Black Resistance in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun abstract: A Raisin in the Sun (1959) is the first play written by an African American woman to be produced in a Broadway theater, and the writer, Lorraine Hansberry (1930-1965), became the first black playwright to win the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. Set in a segregated Chicago neighborhood in the 1950s, A Raisin in the Sun realistically reflects the historical background of the African American civil rights movement. This paper examines gender relations in the Younger family through an analysis of the family structure, which symbolically represents black society during the period of the civil rights movement, in order to problematize the dual oppression of gender and race. Divided into three body sections, the paper first provides a feminist critique of the patriarchal ideology disguised as matriarchy and antiracism. By centering on Big Walter and Walter, the second section argues that the Younger family is male headed, and the establishment of masculinity is important for black resistance against racism at the time. The third section constitutes a new image of African American women by exploring the way they participate in the social movement and how they achieve gender liberation, and it especially focuses on Mama Lena Younger, who helps her family unite to resist racism according to her standpoint as a black woman. In short, while A Raisin in the Sun celebrates African American dignity and pride at the end, it also successfully demystifies the ideology of matriarchy by revealing the male-headed structure of the Younger family and destroys the stereotype of matriarchs by showing Lena's feminist thought.

In particular, Chinese American historical books lack extensive analysis. It is important to reflect cultural accuracy in literature and to help children develop clear concepts of self and others by providing precise cultural and physical characteristics of people. While cultural authenticity allows children the opportunity to see a reflection of real experiences within a book instead of seeing stereotypes or misrepresentations, obtaining correct information about a certain time period can help children to see images of immigration accurately represented in literature. Using the Confucian delineation of interpersonal relationships as the major criterion of cultural authenticity, this article examines three currently available children’s picturebooks set in the historical period between 1848 and 1885. In addition to exploring how Chinese Americans’ interpersonal relationships are portrayed in these children’s historical books, this article argues for more proactive inclusion of the diversity in selection of picturebooks.

As an extension of Balzac's Theory of Gait, this article observes and contemplates a series of gaits in Baudelaire's poems, relating body gaits to writing movements just like the walking gait can be used as expressions of creative works, and the physiology of corporal movements as the rhetoric skills of writing. When Baudelaire wrote his poems, Paris was undergoing a profound disillusionment with the modernization process. Conspiracies against the big reforms were engaged clandestinely. And Baudelaire, the poet who seemed more interested in images of the folks, in details that go beyond what is written, has been looking for his writing resources in the modern life of Paris city. But few people are really aware that these images and details, especially the detailed descriptions of body gait, not only transformed the modernist ideology but played a subversive role in the poetic language. This article follows the poet's traces and works, picking up alongside some figures or images which help clarify some points of our subject, including passer-by, dandy, flâneur, etc.... In the end, we use the term of ＂body without organs＂ by Deleuze to analyze or to draw outline of ambiguous relationships between corporal movements and Baudelaire's poems.

Pym) 翻譯史的方法論為輔，回顧與探討在五四運動前後所發生之翻譯高潮，其相關譯者在當時社會、政治、經濟、歷史與文化脈絡的醞釀之下，對翻譯理論所產生的歷史詭辯與軌變，以及譯者主體性的興衰更迭；其中，尤其針對翻譯活動對中文語言演進的生態所產生的影響提出論述。&#xD;
Hundreds of definitions of translation have been suggested over the years, but few are as intriguing as the one offered by A. Berman (1942-1991), who said that translation is the ＂inn of the remote of the troubadour, which receives strangers within the very heart of mother tongue.＂ In fact, since the dawn of humankind, how many translators have helped to surmount the barriers of distance with a translation which yet provided a mere echo-as if the voice of the remote, silenced by hegemony, finds its own voice? This article focuses on the ethics of translation, an approach to translation studies proposed by Berman and supported by A. Pym's methodology of translation history. Using their arguments about the translator's subjectivity, I focus on translations from other languages into Chinese around the time of China's May 4^th movement. Here I explore such questions as how, in the social, political, economic and historical contexts of that time, might Chinese translators have changed the historical discourses and trajectories of translation theory? How, then, was the translator's identity altered? Among other issues, I am especially interested in the impact at this time of the Chinese translations of foreign language texts, and of what one might call the ethics of foreignization, on the evolution of the Chinese language itself.

    <description>title: 漫遊者波特萊爾：從巴黎到台北，一個現代身體移置的經驗 abstract: 本文是一篇以漫遊者的身體經驗所寫成的巴黎─台北城市史。透過本雅明筆下現代城市「漫遊者」（flâneur）的原型──詩人波特萊爾，這個在十九世紀的巴黎街頭無所事事、遊移的波希米亞人，如何在閒逛的過程中，冷眼目睹逐漸消長的新、舊巴黎，並以身體碰撞永恆的現代性寓言。而很多人不知道，台北在 1970 年前後曾有一段「巴黎化」的過程，包括仁愛圓環、仁愛路、敦化北路林蔭大道以及各項公共藝術的推動等，構想源頭即來自巴黎。據此，本文嘗試從「漫遊者」波特萊爾身體力行的巴黎城作為出發點來理解台北的漫遊文化：在不同時空中的漫遊者，他們是誰？看到什麼？他們的身體如何移動？與他者的關係為何？而用一個歷史漫遊回顧的腳步，來探討台北漫遊文化的轉變，這不僅僅對城市空間外在感官的歷史表列而已，亦即過去對於漫遊者的「身體」所存在的集體與一般的意象，更著重的是身體的內在尊嚴以及身體的多樣性。而在追溯這個身體在時空移動的軌跡時，我們卻發現這個身體，矛盾地以自由為名被規訓化了。&#xD;
The article is an urban history of Paris-Taipei with the corporal experience of flâneurs. Through Baudelaire, the archetype of flâneur in the works of Benjamin, we try to see how this idle wandering bohemian of the 19^th century Paris streets looked coldly at the decline of the city and created the eternal fables of Modernity with body collisions. And few people know that there was ＂the Paris-based＂ reconstruction process in Taipei around 1970, including Dun Hua and Ren Ai grand boulevards and some public art works, the ideas just came from Paris city. Accordingly, this paper attempts to see the flâneur culture in the footsteps of Baudelaire: the flâneurs of different periods of time, who are they? What do they see? How does their body move? And how are their relationships with others? And to review the flâneur culture of Taipei with the historical footsteps, this is not only a historical listing of corporal sensations for external urban space, or the collective or general images of the flâneur's body in the past, but more emphasis is put on the inherent dignity and diversity of the body. While following this retroactive trajectory of the body, we find that this body, contradictorily, has been disciplined in the name of freedom.

Three types of data were utilized: 4-year-old naturalistic data, 4-year-old and 5-year-old controlled conversations. Five discourse-pragmatic functions of the distal demonstrative were identified: the deictic use, the endophoric use, the connective use, the pause-filler function, and the unidentified use, a peculiar use found in child discourse, which further reveals children's inability to properly manage common ground in discourse. A comparison of the distribution of different functions across the data groups shows that children may have acquired the semantics and some pragmatic functions of the distal demonstrative in early years, but they may not yet fully develop the ability to establish common ground and manage coherence until they are five.

Based on historical and synchronic data, it is proposed that the underlying phonological representation of the suffix should better be /əd/ and the schwa gets deleted in the generation of the surface representation under phonological conditions. Given the proposal, the historical development of the suffix can be incorporated into the new account, and the spelling of the past tense suffix, which is highly connected with the phonological information of the suffix, is accounted for as well. This proposal thus implies that the English past tense suffix is generated through a different phonological process from the plural suffix and the third person singular present tense suffix.

A closer examination reveals that children prefer to use simple imperatives in activity-based interactions while both primary forms are found in unstructured daily conversations. The findings suggest that children’s preference for simple imperatives may be driven by their awareness of parents’ cooperativeness in interactional situations. It is thus speculated that simple imperatives and WANT statements may be children’s two primal request forms, but they may pivot on one request form when the situation is right.

本研究之研究方法為民族誌，亦即以田野調查來記錄人類生活或方向，並以參與觀察方法，對特定文化及社會蒐集製作資料、紀錄、評價，進而解釋觀察結果。資料的蒐集包括了訪談，影像記錄，觀察筆記等。研究分析主要由六人次的正式訪談紀錄為主體，以主題分析法進行資料分析，並整合出碧候部落文化與社區組織的關係；之後運用田野調查筆記，影像，以及非正式訪談紀錄等等作為補充性資料，來強化已分析出之主題內容。&#xD;
本研究之分析結果主要有兩個主題：一是部落文化。這個主題呈現經由碧候當地人所描繪出的真實碧候，因此包含了碧候部落的歷史地理背景，碧候部落生活印象與生活中的文化傳承。二則是社區關係。本研究雖意欲討論碧候部落中社區與居民現況，但經資料分析後發現宗教對於社區關係實有不小影響，因此在第二個主題中將分兩部分來探討：其一是宗教活動與傳統文化的衝突，其二則是宗教信仰與社區組織的關係。&#xD;
作為初探性研究，本研究最主要的發現，乃是宗教在碧候部落對於部落文化以及社區組織所造成的重大影響。真耶穌教會與其他基督信仰的教會在宣教方式、教義、組織上的差異，以及渠等對於原住民傳統文化及主流社會價值文化衝突時的態度取向，造成｢雙元｣部落/社區的情形發生。而以碧候社區如此特殊的部落特性而言，要使部落內的兩教派共同參與社區活動，則必須深入兩教派與居民互動，以發現與了解兩教派內所各自關心或認同的活動，尋求共同點，並且鼓勵社區內各個組織間的合作。本研究因而建議未來從事原住民部落/社區發展相關研究必須要重視，且應該要納入考慮與討論的變數是部落/社區內的宗教信仰分布。&#xD;
In recent years, indigenous issues have started to gain attention from society. As a&#xD;
minority group in Taiwan, indigenous people should have the right and the opportunity to&#xD;
keep their own tribal organizations to represent their traditional culture. However, having&#xD;
gone through different political ruling stages, the traditional system in the community/tribe&#xD;
has disappeared. The development of the tribal community is rather slow and outdated.&#xD;
Therefore, it is important to deeply understand the tribal culture before starting to plan&#xD;
community development of tribal villages. And so, the research team decided to spend more&#xD;
time to get to know the community and the tribal culture.&#xD;
This study aims to understand the current situation of the tribal community and the&#xD;
residents’ lives. Hence an ethnographic method was used to record the lives of the Piexau&#xD;
tribal community. Data was collected through participant observations, field notes, individual&#xD;
interviews, images, and logs. Interview data with other data was transcribed and categorized&#xD;
following procedures of Grounded Theory to create themes.&#xD;
There are two major themes in this study: One is the tribal culture, which represents&#xD;
“true Piexau” from eyes of Piexau village’s local residents. Their tribal culture can be&#xD;
presented in three parts: the historical and geographic background of the Piexau, the daily&#xD;
lives of local people, and their cultural traditions. The second theme is the community&#xD;
relationship, which was found directly connected with religious beliefs. Thus two parts are&#xD;
included in the second theme: the conflicts between religious activities and traditional culture,&#xD;
and the relationship between religious belief and community organization.&#xD;
As a preliminary study, the major finding of this study focuses on the significant role&#xD;
that religion plays in Piexau tribal village. The True Jesus Church has different ways of&#xD;
interpreting doctrines, and the attitude towards indigenous traditions is also very different&#xD;
from other Christian Churches. The conflicts in between churches resulted in a dual&#xD;
community where two sides of people refused to participate in the same activity. In order to&#xD;
work on community development in a unique community/tribe like the Piexau, it is important&#xD;
for the researchers to interact with people from both sides and to thoroughly understand the&#xD;
“religious cultures” and the common needs of the community.

    <description>title: 國民黨的原住民選舉動員：一個社會文化互動途徑的初探分析 abstract: 我國選舉制度保障原住民特別席次，其選區劃分係以身分而非戶籍地區分。因此，原住民選民的遷徙，至少就立委選舉層級而言，並不影響其投票權。然而，原住民立委選舉的地理選區仍為全國範圍，就選民分散程度來說，原住民選區遠高過區域選區。在這樣的情形下，過往聚焦於區域選舉而得出的選舉動員相關研究發現，恐未能同樣適用於解釋原住民選舉。不過，社會文化互動理論指出，新遷徙的移民會在建構新身份認同時，會經由雙向定位與歸屬認同的過程中找到新的地位、身分，以及新的「關係模式」，繼而在原生及新社群間建構連結，並相互影響。這種從社會文化互動理論出發的觀點，提供給我們探索現有政治系絡下原住民選舉動員模式的新視角。有鑒於台灣原住民本有強烈之原生社群互動趨勢，在遷移的過程中，不僅大量依靠由原生社群所一起組織而成的新社群提供之社會及人際資源，甚至更進一步利用新社群所建構出之關係與原生社群連接出更緊密之人際資源網絡。因此，本研究擬運用質性研究模式，深度瞭解原住民社群互動的現象，並進一步討論社群互動與人際資源網絡在國民黨原住民選舉動員中所扮演的角色與發展。

 本文將受訪教師的戶外教學經驗整理為「戶外教學定義」、「戶外教學規劃原則」、「以體驗為核心的學習模式」與「戶外教學的學習成效」等四大範疇，前兩者屬教學面，後兩者屬學習面。「離開學校與教室」、「離開單調、僵化、制式的學習情境」是受訪教師定義戶外教學的兩大必要條件。但優質的戶外教學規劃還須創造以感官體驗為核心的學習情境，並善用寓教於樂、課程整合與補充教學等原則，使學生獲得學校無法提供的新經驗與正向學習情緒，並提高師生共同學習的興趣和效果。&#xD;
本文依據研究結果指出未來可進一步探討之研究主題，並提出相關的戶外教學實務建議。

Her plays were commercially and critically welcome by the people of her time, but faded from public interest after her death. It is not until feminists in the second wave of the Women’s Liberation Movement that Glaspell finally reclaims her reputation. Glaspell, portraying the Midwest in her works, is usually labeled as a local colorist. However, this paper re-reads Glaspell’s Trifles (1916) and Woman’s Honor (1918) from the perspectives of place and gender in order to explore the interrelationship between the two in Glaspell’s works, such as how place identity is associated with gender identity and how gender relations are constructed in a place. In light of such a new reading, Glaspell becomes a feminist geographer.

G. Frazer）對吃神肉的巫術探討與佛洛伊德（Sigmund Freud）對聖餐的解釋，來分析儀式具有慶祝重生之意。文章最後分析儀式中的飲食狂歡。奠基於巴赫金（Mikhail Bakhtin）對狂歡節的討論，本文進一步探討狂歡背後所代表的是絕對的自由或是另一形式的順從。簡言，本文從飲食的角度切入《戴神的女信徒》，輔以文化研究的理論，以豐富文本的閱讀。&#xD;
The beginning of Western drama is widely regarded as originating in ritual, particularly in the drama competitions of Dionysia in ancient Greece. Dionysus (or Bacchus) thus becomes a major theme in drama studies. This paper reads Euripides' masterpiece, The Bacchae (405 BC), from the perspectives of eating and food. The first part of the paper considers the coming of Bacchus as an import of a new food, wine, from Asia. The acceptability of wine is parallel with the popularity of Bacchus. The second part deals with Bacchus's animal incarnation, bull, and it is based on Frazer's anthropologist theory and Freud's explanation of communion to discuss Pentheus's inevitable death. The paper, finally, analyzes the meanings of eating and food in ritual, and Bakhtin's carnival theory provides an important theoretical background in this part. Overall, the paper, appropriating cultural studies, aims to open different interpretations of the text by re-reading it from the viewpoints of eating and food.

This pursuit is made more difficult when they find that their newly adopted homeland misrepresents their cultural heritage. This article examines the historical evolution of the Mulan ballad along with issues of cultural authenticity in folktales. The analysis of three English adaptations of the ballad demonstrates clear contrasts that either support or complicate identity formation. We suggest that this text set could be used to inform critical classroom discussions regarding the plurality and fluidity of culture as well as those pertaining to Chinese heritage and cultural authenticity.

We maintain that these practices and discourses intend to establish more unified, narrow, and easily controlled fields of science. In reaction, we argue that the dismantling of systems of domination and hegemony may result from the scientists' commitment to cross the political and methodological boundaries of their practice. Evidence is not about a particular type of data or knowledge, but about how researchers consciously and responsibly operate in various epistemological, methodological, and empirical spaces. Thus, evidence cannot be defined; it can only be described within specific cultural and epistemological contexts.

This paper treats a high regard for Dickens's mature use of London as the multifaceted setting in Bleak House (1852-53). The plots, characters, and themes are all related to the radical urbanization and modernization in nineteenth-century London. This paper first discusses how Dickens represents urban landscape, including narrow streets, the dysfunctional sanitation and sewerage, the building of railways, and the dirty and miserable slum. Dickens's representation attempts to pin down the chaotic city and to re-define the meaning of London. However, the urban landscape is always out of the author's control, just like the fluid and unrepresentable ”fog” in London. Thus, Dickens's description of London, on the one hand, portrays that the city is readable and controllable; on the other hand, it simultaneously reveals that the city is unreadable and incontrollable. This paper then discusses how this unrepresentable and disordered urban landscape becomes the major element of Gothic novel, such as the haunted-house-like London, labyrinth-like streets, ruin-like slum, and vampire-like lawyers. London in this way turns out to be the seedbed of crime. Inspector Bucket is a detective and also a flâneur. The appearance of this character symbolizes a panoptic and rationalized control of urban landscape, but the endless crimes imply the resistance to be dominated. From this perspective, this paper further analyzes that London provides a stage for detection and crime, so Bleak House becomes a detective novel. Overall, this paper attempts to discuss how Dickens represents London and the multiple functions of urban landscape in the Bleak House.
